Not every function in Max is undoable. I've lost work many times by making the same mistake and clicking on something that erased all of my work. I clicked something(?) on accident and the save menu came up and I couldn't press the "continue painting" option for some reason. I clicked the x to close the menu and everything I just did got deleted.
