What I am having trouble with is how do I make that first peice? What is the best way to go about making it?

Thank you again for your help

Hello! I hope the forum can help me figure out how to make this organic shape. It is a wood moulding that can be used along with a chair rail, or crown. You'll see the pattern repeat in it. If I could get one shape figured out, that would be wonderful.

Thank you for any assitance.

Hi, you could model the part that i have highlighted in the print screen, once this is done, select your new object, Shift and place the second pièce and create 11 copies or instances. The only problem is the patterns in your image are not identical, if you want a perfect replica, you will need some adjustments on each parts you have copied.

Hi Adolf, Organic shape is more like Characters, animals, plants and trees and Hard Surfaces is more architectural objects, mechanical objects. Some artists can consider if the object can be deformed and animated, this is organic. But sometimes it may not apply. Some explanations Here.

You can create the shape of the first part with curves, and then create NURBS surfaces.

Or you can create a low poly object, place your edges correctly and apply a turbosmooth.

Or you could use box modelling.

Really depend on your experiences with NURBS modelling or Poly modelling and sometimes it depend on how you will use this object.

Hello!

I am still working on these organically shaped mouldings, and I am stumped on the last one. I have tried curves with nurb surface, and polygons with turbosmooth, but i just can't get this shape right or it is way to lumpy. Can anyone help me with this please? I have attached an image of what I am trying to build. The moulding is 1/2" thick x 1" tall.

Thank you

Hi, here what i did pretty fast, so it's not perfect, but you could modify this file to suit exactly what you need.

One problem is the panels in your picture are not symetrical.

I joined a zip with the .max file saved in 2013.

Hope it will help.

Hi, i am glad that you like it. I'm not sure i understand about the notice, maybe you can post a print screen.

First i configured your images as references, and i started with a single poly which i extruded to suit the object in front view. Once the front view was done, in side view, i moved the vertices to fit the side reference, add symmetry, a turbosmooth and a simple uvw map. In production, i would take more time to unwrap the uv correctly.

The selected part is where i began.

Hi Eric,

The message I received reads: "The MassFX authored in this file was created with a newer version of the plugins. Forward compatibility is not supported, so things might not behave properly."

I am using 3ds Max 2014 x64.

Keeping the polygons from crossing into a plane they shouldn't be in has been my problem. I will practice with your instructions.

Thank you again!
