So I got the archmodels vol.100 pack from evermotion but when I open it in 3ds max the leaves look really weird:

in comparison to what they look like on the site

I'm very new to 3ds max so I don't know why the leaves are so big and many or why the have like polygonal shapes but it's really stessing me out because I don't know how to fix it...

The leaves geometry are just polygons. They rely on an Alpha channel or Opacity map in their material to get a leaf-like shape. What you are seeing in the viewport is un-mapped geom (though mapping can be displayed in the viewport).

See how they look in the render, be sure to have the correct materials applied.

So how do I fix it? Do I just find a way to apply the materials correctly or is there more to it?

Apply the material to the tree, if materials are included in the pack. If not you will need to create materials. I would think that the models already have material IDs and mapping coords, so it should not be too difficult.
