Ooh, I see! I was indeed doing it wrong. It seems that 3ds Max looks at "Inset" as a separate thing from "Extrude". It was very helpful--thank you very much for your reply 🙂

In Maya and Blender (sorry for putting them together, but they're still CG programs), when you extrude a face or faces, the face is extruded then you get the option to move, scale, or rotate. However, in 3ds Max, extruding moves the face first before I get to scale or rotate it. There are many times when I just want to scale the face and not move it after extruding. I can't seem to find an option to do that in 3ds Max. Does anyone know how I may do that? Am I just doing something wrong?

Thank you very much for your help. I'm kinda a 3ds Max beginner (and even a CG beginner), so I'm sorry if I may seem unknowledgeable.

Hi,

The easy way, if the object is an ebitable poly rather than mesh, may be to use the settings tab to get the desired height followed with a right click to access scale, rotate move etc. It is possible to switch tools with the extrude menu panel open but the transform tools will transform the group of extruded poly's rather than the single selected poly. For manipulating a single poly simply close the extrude settings to continue. If you don't want an extruded face then you're best of using the Inset tool which will give you the extra set of faces that the extruded poly would without the transform.
