Hi,

The workflow you have mentioned most probably belongs to Surface Modeling.

I cant be sure because you didn't provide any screenshots.

I'll kindly ask for a few screenshots so i can examine and explain what it is and how it can be done.

Best regards;

I was casually watching a youtube tutorial of modeling a human head in some other 3d tool, I'm not sure which, and saw the step where he extruded the edges at the top of the face to create the top and back of the skull. In this case he did it in one step by selecting the top edge at the forehead and then extruding around a radial path with the center at the ear. It took 3 sesconds. In my previous linited experience this has taken me anything from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.

Can I do the same in 3ds Max?

I'm sorry but I am currently 3500 miles away from my computer. I don't know how to describe it better. After completing the face there is (according to all topology recommendations I have seen) a row of polys across the forehead, which is curved. I could add additional rows quite easily by simply extruding from the edge backwards guessing each point over the top of the head. But the resulting 'helmet' would have to be manually tweaked, to make a good head shape, which would take a long time. A smoothly curved extrusion would still have to be tweaked, but not nearly as much. The example I saw was, I now know, from Blender. He set a centre point at the ear an extruded the entire top and back of the head in one operation.
