So I find this to be a big annoying bug to a my editable poly modeling workflow. I've logged it with Autodesk twice now. Once over a year ago and today. I'm current with Max2016 and sp4, I'm not switching any time soon to 2017 as I hear it's a lot like the 2015 release.

Please see the attached images showcasing the issue I'm encountering. Maybe there's a new setting I'm missing somewhere in Max? If so I'd love to hear about it 🙂

The image with a gun was on a, Nvidia quadro k5000

The image of the head is on a, Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti.

Both were running whatever default Display Driver is used.

Currently I'm using a GeForce GTX 980 Ti with Nitrous Driect3D 11, and still getting the problem. If I switch to Direct3D 9 the problem goes away! Woohoo... seems like a hacky fix.... Is this a problem with the driver or 3ds?

I should add this to my list of steps to re-create the issue: Make sure to toggle on backface culling when viewing the wireframe mode, (Why the new default is now off boggles my mind).

Hello @Anonymous,

Thanks for the additional info about the backface cull, that was a key bit of info for finding more information about this. We have a bug logged about this issue happening in 2016 SP4, so you're not doing anything wrong. It seems to be specific to 2016.

I just wanted to follow up here, I found that this doesn't happen in DX9. Might be a simple solution to the problem for right now.

Best Regards,

This only happens in 2016 - it doesn't occur in 2017.

I have a GeForce GTX 960 here - also does it on my 7 series GeForce at home. 3DS Max doesn't support Geforce cards?

Is there any workaround for people who can't switch graphics mode (to DX9) due to shader requirements?

It also only works if you have 'Backface Cull' on in the Display settings. If you turn this off it disappears (until you turn it back on again of course).

Hello @jibijib,

Yes I have also seen this doesn't exist in 2017. Looks like a problem with the backface cull as you'd mentioned. Geforce cards are supported, it's just a bug it seems with backface cull and DX11 in SP4. The graphics card doesn't matter, I'm on a quadro on my laptop and I can repro.

The workaround would be to not use backface cull for the time being, if DX9 isn't an option. Or you could try SP3, it's listed in the tracker as only affecting SP4 for 2016, but I would try to avoid going back.

Best Regards,
