ProBoolean or procutter?

Recently I have been making gyroid forms to make an interior for a theater for my architecture degree, and I have been coming across with a few issues with the proboolean when trying to achieve my hopes and dreams.

I will attach a copy of the 3ds max file to see is anyone who is willing to help could give me a good result, but in words, this is what I am trying to achieve. Like I said, I have this multitude of gyroids connected to each other to create a large enough volume to allow me to hollow out and apply a space for my auditorium (seating and front of stage). I have created the volume I want to use to hollow out the gyroid block, but when I use either the proboolean or procutter, it either leaves a print of where the two intersect, creating a skin, instead of leaving the 'exterior' solid and the 'interior' hollow. I have tried the proboolean in a different part with just a simple cube, which works exactly how I want it to, but it doesn't work for the main volume I want to use as the hollow.

The images should also help you get an idea of what I'm trying to do, but all in all I'm quite stuck as to how to solve my issue, whether it's the way I'm using the Proboolean wrong, or whether my form is to complex for 3ds max to get its head around, but i would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me!

Regards

Tom

Hello @Anonymous,

This is a really interesting project. I can see what you're trying to do by the screen grabs you attached, very cool!

Have you tried breaking up the gyroids into multiple objects and using ProBoolean Compound Object?

Would you be able to attach your max file so I can have a look and do some tests on my end?

I look forward to your reply! =]

Hi Faline

I actually solved the issue myself after playing around with the Proboolean. I think that the form I wanted to use to cut out of the gyroid form was too complex for 3DS max to calculate, so I simplified it to just a chamfered box which cut all the way through, then used FFD (4x4x4) to the shape the gyroid to how I wanted it to, the result was actually very nice, hopefully I will be able to upload a picture of the renders I have done for it.

Thank your for your response anyway Faline, was greatly appreciated 🙂

Regards

Tom
