Try changing the viewport lights from a one light setup to a two light setup that is down to the default light that is in the background once you add the lighting to your model then that black will go away!

I'm trying to create pivot doors for an interior scene in 3ds Max, but I got a weird shape after placed the door on the wall (screenshot attached). Any idea why this is happening? Thank you.

are the walls still in AEC or have you converted them down to a poly? if you converted them down to a poly then you cannot select and link the doors to the walls you would been to boolean a box and then put the doors in place

If they are still in AEC then you can just use the select and link to link the door to the walls. max will automatically cut the hole for you

I added an Edit Poly modifier on top of it...that's why...Thank you!

One more question, is that normal if the door is showing this "black shading" (screenshot attached)?

you can add a edit poly mod to the AEC walls, and then use the select and link to link the door to the walls, and max will still cut out the opening to the door, mmm i am not sure why you cannot convert your AEC walls and max doesn't let you select and link the door to the walls

arrrr annoying never knew that
