topic Modeling, UVW unrap or export issue? in 3ds Max Modeling Forum

Hi,

I modeled a pistol in 3DS Max 2016, did the smoothing groups, unwrapped, rendered a material id map and exported the obj file to Quixel Suite for sculpting and texturing details. However, when I opened the 3DO viewer and then applied a test gunmetal material from the smart material for preview, I see the model displayed as like in the screenshots below.

I also attached the material id map I baked out of 3DS Max, the UV layout screenshot and a screenshot of the obj export settings so that it can be analyzed. I wanted to upload the max file but I wasn't allowed to.

I changed the scale slider in the smart material properties, but the tesselations (I suppose that's what it's called) didn't go away. I don't understand if it's something to do with the model itself, the exporting technique, or something else. I would request you all to help me.Please help me.

The model and mappings appear to be fine in 3ds Max when I check them from the Max file and the same when I import the .obj into Max and apply a UV check material that I made off of your UV.png although I do get a warning that it requires a UV map applied to the imported object. I would suspect that the problem may be in Quixel based on what I've found but I don't have that so cannot tell you for sure or determine what is wrong on that end.

Stephen

Thanks for replying. So you mean to say that when you import the obj in 3ds max, it gives you a warning that there are no uvs? Have you tried to import the obj in any other 3d application or painting software?

No. I do all of my modeling and UVs in Max and then paint up output UVs in Photoshop.

Hello @Anonymous,

I think what is happening is that the material in DDO is applying only to material ID channel 2. When I open your Max file and select ID 2 it selects the exact faces that have the material applied in your screenshot. I don't know DDO well enough to tell you how to set it to see all the material ID's, but another easier fix would be to select the entire gun elements in Max and set the ID to 1 or 2 and then re-export. Can you please try that for me?

Best Regards,

Hi, Alfred, thanks for your advice. However, I am a bit new to 3ds Max and have moved from Maya a month ago. Could you please give a step by step procedure to do whatever (i.e Mat Id 1 or 2) you asked me to do? Please also tell me how did you select MAt id2 and found the faces which were showing strange in the screenshot.
Sorry, My comments are a bit confusing, but I am very much pressed for time and thus am a bit agitated, just because I don't know where the issue is actually.

Hello @Anonymous,

I can do one better than that! I recorded a video a while back for another user to help with this same issue. The object isn't the same, but the concepts are. I have embedded it below, please let me know if you have any questions! I also have a link here to the help for more information.
