Hey all,

Our firm has started drafting in Revit 2025 recently, and our installs for 3ds Max 2025 are planned to push out in another month or two. So I'm in a situation where I'm still using Max 2023 but need to link in a Revit file from version 2025.

My first attempt prompted Max to install the Interoperability Tools. But after that, attempts to link the RVT file give me an error stating Exception has occurred when importing.

As a workaround I'm exporting an FBX to get the model into Max, but I don't get all the cameras I need. And I may need to update the link in the near future, which would be quicker if I could link directly to the Revit model.

Is there a trick to getting Revit 2025 into 3ds Max 2023?

Somewhat related, if I export an FBX file from Revit 2025 and link that into 3ds Max 2023 using the preset to Combine By Revit Material it creates a massive object named Generic with a Multi/Sub-Object material that has over 40 sub-materials that are all named Generic. Most of the texture maps in these materials aren't pathed correctly to our server, but display a weird path that Max doesn't understand. (And neither do I.)

It starts with this: adp:?asset=\... then a bunch of numbers and letters.

I'm thinking it may be related to a material type that 3ds Max or FBX can't translate properly.

First, uninstall the interoperability patch that was auto-installed and try installing it manually, meaning download it and install it outside of Max. I did the automatic install through Max at one point and ran into problems as well.

Second, this may not be necessary if the manual install fixes the issue. However, you might need to re-install the latest VC Redistributable. I seem to have to install this every time there is an update to VRay as they apparently have been bundling an older version in the installer. I'm not saying it's a VRay issue, just that some installers haven't updated their version of the redistributable.

Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn

May I ask was the file in ACC cloud? or it's in your local drive. If it's in the cloud system, could you try moving it to local drive to see if that works? Also, when linking the files in 3ds Max, what error were you experiencing? Thanks!

The file I am linking is located on a server, but was saved down from ACC. We regularly link to Revit files from this drive without issue, as long as they are Revit 2023.

As stated previously, the error is the rather generic "Exception occurred while importing."

@haifeng_yuSEVKN and @Casey_H_ I had the Interoperability Tools uninstalled from my computer, then installed the latest version available (InteroperabilityTools_10_0_3_13482_2025). It did not change anything.

Attempts to link a Revit 2025 file into 3ds Max 2023 still failed. Before I have a chance to choose the view, the error 'Exception occurred while importing' comes up. (on a side note, the word 'occured' is spelled wrong in the message)

Then I tried to link an FBX file that was exported from Revit 2025 using the option to Combine by Revit Material. Same as before, most of the model is an object named Generic with a huge Multi/Sub-Object material.

One thing I have discovered is that all objects that DID come in correctly have a similar warning in Revit related to their material. In the corner, they all have the yellow flag with a popup message stating 'For improved rendering, replace the current appearance asset in this material with a newer version'. This leads me to believe that 3ds Max 2023 is unable to properly translate the newer materials in Revit.

Maybe it's just the materials that are the issue? Is it possible to export without the materials from Revit? It's not ideal, but at least you might be able to get the model into Max.

I found this page from June 2024: "Autodesk Revit Interoperability for 3ds Max is not installed" when linking a Revit file or an FBX file in 3ds Max

It states a few times that the versions must match. 😞

It's clear that users assume these programs will work together, so I hope AD improves the relationship between Max and Revit over time. In the meantime, AD could improve the linking or import dialog with warnings about version mismatch. They could also put more info in the error box since they know the versions need to match, it should just say that!

Anyway, thanks for trying.

Thank you very much for the information. I really appreciate your effort in identifying the potential cause, which seems to be a material incompatibility in 3ds Max 2023. In this case, I would suggest either using FBX for this workflow, or upgrading both Revit and 3ds Max to the 2025 version to see if that resolves the issue.
