Here I convert my .mp4 files to .avi using the MJPEG codec. This way I can load the .avi files and play them on a TV screen.

Hi,

I have some trouble in my max9, when I'm trying to load any avi file as a projector or material diffuse or even a viewport bkg,
the dialog does nothing until I press cancel, then I got this error message:

'' No handle for the Given file '' (and just an OK button)

I got this error with any AVI file: divx, uncompressed frames, cinepack, lagarith. etc. All the codec are properly installed
in my workstation.
I got this error also inside max6. It's very frustrating.

Thank you & greetings.

That sounds more like a system problem rather than a Max problem - especially as you're seeing it in different versions. Do those .avi's play in other applications like Media Player?

Things change,

Now I can open lagarith video files inside Max7, but no divX files or cinepack.
In Max9 I can't load any avi file at all.
Any help?

I have noticed that inside max7's folder structure, inside the folder plugincfg, there's a files called avi.cfg, binary with a 'lagarith' legend inside, etc. I have copied it to the max9 same folder but nothing happens.

Thank you.
(Sorrry I have Max7 & 9, no Max6. TYPO on my first post. Also the correct error message is: ''No driver to handle given file''. But only when trying to import an AVI as a viewport bkg, when importing to lights or materials, there is no error message it just don't load it.)

I don't know what to suggest - Max should be able to play an avi if the codec is correctly installed in the system. Can you even load it into the RAM Player (in Max)?

Sending files is not allowed so don't ask.

This is not the only place to troubleshoot... there is a Knowledgebase. Did you search there?

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/index?siteID=123112&id=5585571&linkID=9241177

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/kb/autoindex?siteID=123112&id=2334144&linkID=9241177

It sounds like you have a problem with some Codecs being understood by Max. One thing you can try is to rename the 3dsmax directories, then reinstall to the default folder... not the renamed folder. That may fix any registry or file errors. If that works, then you can compare the registry or copy out some driver files and revert them to the original install you renamed. You would then name the new folder something, and restore the name on the original folder.

Ex.

Rename 3dsmax9 to Z_3dsmax9.
Install 3dsmax9 to 3dsmax9.
Start the Max in the 3dsmax9 folder, try AVI. If it works, check registry for changes, or copy files you want to try to use.
Rename 3dsmax9 to X_3dsmax9.
Rename Z_3dsmax9 to 3dsmax9. Copy in the files you wanted to try if there are any, try AVI. If it works, it's either the registry or the files.

Hope that helps.

I'll try the solution you gave right away.
My max7 is working ok with any video file now.
Well..
The problem continues with max9 & 2008, now I tried something else:

C:\> format C: /q /u

HAHA, nah.. just a joke. It would work, but now I can't.

Now really, I try this one:
Mission: To clear all the computer codecs & reinstall'em.

It was a mess, but now I have only 390 codecs against 510+ before the clean up.
At 390 no matter how I tried, I can't uninstall any more.

And all my video data is readable, ONLY OUTSIDE max9 and 2008. 😞

After all the codec mess, (it took me about all day and night huntingdown / reinstalling) my max9 and 2008 have the
exactly same trouble. wont load video data. 😞 😞 It just reads a few (very few, about 1 of 15) MPGs1, thats all.

Any ideas in how to contact directly to Autodesk?
ThankYou.

I would try contacting your reseller first - you can contact AME, but unless you have a Support Contract then you have to pay per incident - and I doubt it's particularly cheap.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/autoindex?siteID=123112&id=5547831&linkID=9241177

Can you post one of those mpegs - small one, under 3.5MB zipped to see if we can open it in max?

Sooo I took the offending avi into Premier and exported it as a straight Microsoft AVI with no compression and it still refuses to load. When I look at it in G-Spot it says "No Codec Required ". So I made a plane and tried to apply the AVI through the Material Editor... same thing. Almost.... Where the file name should be it says "No I/O Handlers Found"

Hi Tejus,

Did you ever find a solution to this, as I am having the same problem. I have uninstalled Max, and all my codecs and re-installed. I think it all happened after I got a nasty virus which took me 3 days to get rid of. I am on the point now of re-installing windows, but I don't really have the time to do it.

I have got around it recently by using IFL files, but it is long winded for simple tests.

Asimov

Well, I have to chime in here too, because I am having the same issues.
MAX won't let me map a surface with an .avi file.
It won't let me create the material with the .avi file as a bitmap.
When making the material, I can select the .avi, but nothing happens after that.
I've done this before a few years ago. Not sure what version... maybe Max 2010?
I'm now using Max Design 2013.
Lyle

If you're using 64bit Max you can almost forget it - there are very few 64bit codecs. Either use 32bit Max or extract the frames from the avi to an image sequence, create an IFL for them and use that.
I would have mentioned this before but I didn't have a 64bit system until after Max2009 was released. This issue has been raised here many times since then.

Well, I converted the original .mov to an uncompressed .avi and it is working fine now.
I used the AVS Video Converter (if I can mention that here).

Hey, has anyone found a definitive answer to this yet? I'm using 3ds Max 2015 and I have the exact same problem. I can get as far as the dialog box where you select your AVI file, but when I select my AVI file I can't open it, the open button isn't grayed out but it just does nothing at all. And when I close out of the dialog box I get the error message "No Driver to Handle Given File". Additionally I get the same problem in the RAM player, except the error message never pops up.

I hope someone knows how to solve this, it's been like 9 years. Thanks!
