Try getting rid of your point selection sets or any 1 or 2 point polygons, that can effect the import/export from lightwave to max.

These are peer-to-peer forums - user to user - not a direct line to AME support, so in general no, they are not monitored by AME.

You haven't really given us much to go on, just an error message. If no-one has seen that they're not going to be able to help.
Is it one object or all objects? Can you post the .obj (if it's not too big and not confidential). Otherwise, try different export / import options or even a different file type.

Thanks for the reply! Yes its all obj's that I export out of LW. I spoke to a colleague of mine who has an older version of max that imports it just fine with no error and its the same file that im trying to import here. I also get another error when trying to import an obj that was created in Modo, so basically its every obj that I create will not open in 3ds max 2009 sp1. Test1.zip is exported from LW and test.zip is exported from Modo. thanks for the help.
17130_v7DELdWDM6RSZabkdLgJ.zip

17131_qoRwfkINm2Nxu1xfMZ7v.zip

I get the same errors.

Test.obj - "Polygon index error"
Test1.obj - "Error in file: meshname = shapename"

I have successfully imported .obj files many times from posts on these forums, so the only conclusion is that the problems are being caused either directly by the other software (or the user of that software 😉 ) or by the .obj export routines (or options therein) in those packages.

Attached is a .obj created in Max 2009 - I'm guessing it will import perfectly.
17149_eEHZGeg8UmTpdYfalq0y.zip

I thought the same things, but why would the same obj's open in an older version of max but then give errors in 2009? And I dont have any trouble opening these obj's in other software such as Zbrush or opening them in Lightwave or Modo. Why is Max so special?

They do indeed import in earlier versions (9 and 2008), but in both cases and on both files those versions report "1 unsupported command", so there is something odd with those files. Why 2009 rejects them as it does I can't answer.

Might be an idea to report it as a bug here and link back to this thread.

hello.i got same error message in max2009&2010.
I think can't import OBJ file of "MAX to LW to MAX".

in case, if obj file is Symmetry Object.
Export harf of object From MAX,and fix in LW.when done, mirror that harf object.and delete base object of harf.
and mirror again.that purpose is completey delete srf of bild in MAX.(so that not one way)
then export OBJ and Import in MAX.
I could import that.
That way is for only symmetry object.so....
I made up my mind buy modo!
