topic Auto snap verts to whole numbers on object move or dragging? in 3ds Max Forum

Doing some simple structural modeling and was wondering if there is a way for max to automatically snap verts/positions to whole numbers (or a specificed grid, 2,4,8, etc), kind of like world editors for games like the editor for Source?

For example, let's say I start with a box at 0,0,0 that's 16x16x16. If I extrude a side, or delete the face on the east side and then shift-drag the 4 edges from the deleted face, it would be awesome if wherever it lands (i.e. X = 45.89127195) that it would auto-snap to X = 45 when I let go of the mouse-drag. The same could apply to the origin of an object for moving entire objects?

I know there is a 3d snap tool in 3ds max, and it kind of does this, *sometimes*, but it's clunky and awkward to use, and often doesn't work or works against you. i.e. you can select 2 verts (which are already snapped to whole numbers, i.e. Y = 9 and Y = 10, and, selecting them both, averages their position (Y = 9.5), and when you try to move them both now, it snaps that AVERAGED centerpoint to the grid, making it impossible to place them in a whole-number-snapped spot (and also impossible to just let go / put them back where they started without Ctrl+Z). You'd have to disable the 3d snap, manually move the verts by typing in positions, or move them individually (not grouped) with snap on, which seems crazy if you have like 14 verts on one (snapped) wall. Or detach to object, enable 3d snap, and move it at an object level, so there's no position averaging, and then re-attach/re-weld (which is nuts). It's actually faster for me to avoid max's 3d snap tool altogether and individually type in locations as I go, which still takes a long time.

Is there perhaps a plugin for the behavior I'm looking for? Thank you 🙂
