topic Cut Metal materials in 3ds Max Forum

I am evaluating whether 3ds Max is a good tool for our company and I have no prior experience so I apologize for such a simple question. As a test I am trying to make a simple cylinder with a black anodized aluminum material material. This renders fine. What I need to do now is cut a slice (lengthwise) out of the cylinder and have the two cut faces look like bare aluminum (or maybe brushed).

Just in case it affects the answer I created the part using a boolean where a box was substracted from the cylinder.

I've tried selecting those two faces (using the modifier mesh select-> Face) and applying a different material to them but that changes the material of the whole part.

Do I need to apply a texture to the faces instead of changing the material? I looked in the help files and came across the "Multi/Sub-Object Material" but I don't think that is what I should use.

Any help is appreciated.

Indeed, you need to assign different Material-ID's for the cut surface and use a multi-sub material for the cylinder.

And just remember perfect planer surfaces don`t make good reflections.

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/flat_metallic_surfaces/flat_metallic_surfaces.htm
