"Snaps use Axis Constraints". It's on the Snaps toolbar, the Axis Constraints toolbar and on the Snaps dialog (options tab). There are also 2 shortcuts assigned to that - Alt+F3 and Alt+D (you probably pressed one of those accidentally).
When that is on simply grab the appropriate Gizmo Axis and Move the object (or sub-objects) - no need for Shift, in fact you really want to leave Shift alone (unless you're deliberately trying to Clone something).

Snaps will not necessarily restrict you to a single axis, your snap will snap you to points in the scene grid, vertices, lines, and a variety of other snapping options. To easily see them simply right click on the snap icon to set what you want to snap to.

If you want to restrict to an axis, do not use snaps. Select to move and select tool and drag along one of the arrow handles in the viewport (red for x, blue for z, green for y)

Hope this helps.

Snap used to be constrained with the shift key, but in 2025, that doesn't work anymore, which is a nightmare. In the image below how do I draw that second line straight down, snapping to that parallel line? Before, I would hold downshifts to accomplish it. Now, I have to snap to the end and go back and move the endpoint.
