Hello @Byteman ,

The part on the left sure does look like a body object. If that is the case, you have to use the weld function before converting it to prevent the problem you are experiencing. If you do that, typically (in my limited experience with body objects) when you then convert the mesh will be cleaner/whole. You can do it within 3dsmax, you don't have to do it on import.

At least, if I am understanding your dilemma.

Best Regards,

The object on the left is a part of a robot arm, imported as an IGES file.
I'm trying to create the effect of a glowing net (or a grid), covering the surface. The idea is that, the robot arm is aware of its surroundings and its surface. When a person approaches, the grid will turn to some other color, slowing down the motion of the robot and eventually stop upon contact.

Due to the imported format, the regions of the model separated by edges are separate elements. I couldn't simply use the Push modifier on a copy, to create the net object. (The model on the right)

Converting to mesh (or poly) and welding doesn't help create a clean surface, as the number of vertices on separate regions do not match and positions do not align. This creates open edges. (There are also details)

Tried skin wrap, Retopolgy (Welded details mess up) and even meshing tools like Krakaoa.

I'm out of options. Is there any simple tool that I can use?
