Arch and Design templates not working anymore and errors

Hi all, since yesterday, with arch and design material, i cannot select any template. Whatever i chose in the list is not applied.

I have reset 3ds max, repair, reinstall, clean full reinstall and i still have this problem.

All updates are installed.

Also, when i chose a template, i received a message "Property is read-only: EffectiveSelfIllum"

Hi,

Have you installed anything else on the PC since it last worked? (Except for reinstalling Max as you have done).

Are you signed in as administrator, or an account with full-rights?

Hi, thank you very much for your answer.

I just tried to copy the file mrArch_DesignTemplates.mat from a working computer but it didn't worked.

To be honest, i was expecting that because this morning i have clean uninstalled/reinstalled 3ds max 2016 (uninstalled, deleted and cleaned everything in program files, programdata, registry and profile).

Yes i am a full administrator and the last thing i have installed on my computer is inventor R3.

I have 3ds Max Design 2015 on my computer and i don't have this problem.

I tried just for fun to copy the library from 3ds max design 2015 to 3ds Max 2016 (look the same file), and it's not working.
I took the library in 2016, copy to 2015 and when i tried running 2015, it's working.

So i have a feeling that it's not this library the problem.

I tried to login with a new admin user and have the same problem.

Right now i'm trying a new clean uninstall.

Ok my problem is solved and not solved

I try a new full clean uninstall and the only thing i made differently is i have uninstalled all Autodesk material library 2016. And i used ccleaner to clean all registry errors and temp folders. And i finally reboot before reinstalling. I have opened 3ds Max and everything worked correctly.

Until i installed SP2 and ext 2 from the application manager.

Now i run 3ds max 2016 and my problem is back.

I uninstalled ext2: didn't solved the problem.

I uninstalled SP2: solved the problem. (5 minutes to install and 1 hour to uninstall)

So i suspect the installation of SP2 from the application manager.

SP2 on it's own for 3DSMAX 2016, (even without installing the extention pack) will corrupt Arch+Design material template presets. Most of mine are now not changing, they mostly all look the same. Only basic Matte Finish and Glossy finish seem to make any noticable changes to the base material, the rest don't really do anything to change basic material.

I created a maxscript which fixes the failing part in the shipping code.

Just download it and run it in your 3ds Max 2016 SP2 installation. It will patch one shipping maxscript ( meditfunctions.ms ) and inserts an errorhandler arround the failing function. This allows the failing code in the relevant script to continue.

A backup of the original file will be created before modifying it ( meditfunctions_ORIGINAL.ms)

Reason for the failing code are some new readonly properties which throw an error when the script tries to modify them

My changes are completely transparent and do not effect any functionality, its only the error check added ( try()..catch() clause ).

simply run the script via drag&drop onto your 3ds Max 2016 SP2 viewport

Just to add:
If possible please run Max and the script as an administrator
I still have to test on W8 and W10, which came with vast security changes. Thus it's possbile that the script itself fails to write the patched file correctly. Will report back after i know more, anyone else please report too..

Thanks - thats good to hear. Had no troubles on W8.1 here either ( even with a standard, non-administrator user)

But as my setups are always heavily customized it's more meaningfull if reported by someone else...

I tried the script, but this seems not to work right...

It will rename meditfunctions.ms to meditfunctions_ORIGINAL.ms and saved a patched version... But know i get a traceback with the origin file:

So i renamed meditfunctions_ORIGINAL.ms to meditfunctions_ORIGINAL-ms and so it's invisible for max and then it works.

Good catch

I forgot that ALL of the scripts in that folder still get evaluated each max start, so if the meditfunctions_ORIGINAL.ms file gets evaluated after the meditfunctions.ms the original, unpatched function will be executed again

At least there is no harm done, the fix simply would'nt be applied

I quickly will replace the script with an updated version and post when it's done...

It would be best if people would redownload the script ( now marked as V2 in the filename ) and run it again via drag&drop

The script now detects a previously created, illnamed backupfile and removes/renames it to a name which causes the script to NOT be evaluated at startup

Hi Spacefrog!

I just tried your updated V2 to see if it does find your renamed file.

It does and change the name.

However it still seems to be loaded and now is giving me the error again, which it didn't before with V1.

I would recommend to really remove the original from the stdscripts folder, just to be on the save side.

Thats pretty strange that the script should still is evaluated even with the modfied extension

Nevertheless i could repro it here to - which i did'nt notice before

So here's one final V3 version of the patch which creates backup in the user's temp folder and moves existing backups to there

So i can only quote myself from above again:

Thank you so much for this fix spacefrog, i was going crazy here not knowing what is going on with A&D Materials, after i installed SP2 yesterday.
