Hi...I'm a Maya guy who pops in here occasionally to read the Max threads. I too noticed Steve's absence from the forums about a month ago, so I sent him a private message. Just wanted to let you guys know that Steve decided to move on and is no longer with AD. He's a great guy, and I too am sorry to see him go.

I have a suspicion that many people are going to follow suit. I don't know Steve's specific incentives to move on, if this is true. But I would very much suspect that many people are essentially feeling that AD has dishonored itself with the new licensing changes. There are no small number of people who take offense to this change and feel it's a change that shows a lack of commitment to customers as partners. It's a new model that really makes customer loyalty and commitment irrelevant; I have a feeling based on following Steve for years that this could play a role.

But alas, maybe he's just enjoying a cold drink on a beach with a beatiful woman.

I could not agree with you more about the new licencing system that Autodesk and Adobe have thrust upon us and caused a tsunami of other developers to do the same, all seeing the green money swirling in the water from the brilliant (from a CFO's perspective) concoction.

However, it's going to kill a lot of small studios who are now being forced to pay monthly or yearly subscription fees to a dozen or more of the software develpers that we are required to use to do our 3d work. Add up all of the subscription fees and you find that your yearly software costs have quadroupled. What's worse is that small studios have large swings in cashflow. Just wait till the cashflow is low and several critical softwares expire and cease to function. Now you have a situation where you can't even do the work to get paid because the software is dead. It's the worst thing to happen to us. And yes, it shows complete disragard for we consumers no matter how warm and fuzzy their marketing material tries to make it sound. A few thoughtful developers are now offereing "Indie" licences at a better rate and that does help a bit.

If we don't see you again Steve, good luck. We'll miss your assistance.

I originally started off using Lightwave many years ago. Recently, I discovered that Newtek was offering a discounted upgrade to the 2015 version for users of any previous version...so for $400 I thought "what the heck," and upgraded my version 7...which came out 14 years ago. Now that's a policy I can live with!

Though i'm sad to hear that he left the building, i'm glad at the same time that he is okay. I was'nt even aware that he is really a fulltime employee at autodesk. I shared rants with him in the past over some previous silly/customer hostile Autodesk decisions, so it indeed sounds believeable that the switch to a rent-only licensing model may finally have been enough.

But as long as he does'nt post his real reasons, i think this is more of a speculation...

I've talked to Steve since he went silent. In terms of why he's moved on, I'll leave that to him to share if/when he chooses. But in terms of our community, it's a sad truth that he'll likely no longer be sharing future adventures with us here. It's a loss to us and to AD.
