For orthographic views, such as top, front, and left, there are two coordinates shown. For a view coordinate, those coordinates will be x and y. For world, those coodinates will be the same across all the viewports. Having the multiple coordinate options is a convenience, especially the local coordinates.

To expand a little on the previous answer...

View coordinates are based off your current viewport view. Let's say you're in a Front view. Y will run up and down, X will run back and forth, Z will run towards you or away.

World coordinates are static, and do not change regardless of your view. They are what you would find in the Top viewport.

A good way to see how this works is to set your viewport layout to 4 viewports and set the coordinates to View. Set one as Top, one as Front, one as Left, and the final as Perspective. Draw a box, and enable the Move tool. With the Perspective view active, you'll see the colored arrows in each of the viewports depicting which direction is which. If you look at the Front viewport, the blue Z arrow will be pointed up. But if you make that view active, it will become Y.

If you then change to World coordinates, the arrows never change color. They are set to show the absolute direction of X, Y, and Z.

Does this make sense?
