Hello Everyone,

Im new to the 3ds max world, I been having issues when importing assemblies from Inventor. After the import is complete when I hover over my assembly is one solid piece everything is highlighted, which is fine, I can go to the group tab and ungroup it. My issue is after the ungroup, why is everything single piece items? I would think as soon as I ungroup it I would have sub-assemblies similiar to my original Invetor file. Is like if I hit explode and I have to link everything again. Is there a better way to manage this situation? How can I import from Inventor and keep the same sub-assemblies? I would hate to link over 300 peices back again in 3ds max.

Thanks!!!

Hi,

you could open the group instead of ungrouping all the objects by using "Group - Open" or you can also open all the sub-groups by using "Group - Open Recursively".

Another thing, if you open all the groups, you should keep the objects hierarchy, so you can select them by using the Select by Name icon.

Please let me know if this can help your workflow, thanks !

Hey Bruno,

Thanks for the help. Before importing to 3ds max, do I have to do something in inventor differently? Because after the import is complete in my 3ds max tree all I see is a bunch of items with the same name. Not what I have in my tree from Inventor. How can I change that? Is that the issue? I want to do my rotations and animation in 3ds max, is just a little harder if I have to re group everything instead of having sub assemblies similar in Inventor.

BTW, I try what you suggested and it did not work.

Hi again !

I did a test with an Inventor sample (Blower assembly), I've choose File Import - and selected the Blower.iam file.

Using the Scene Explorer tool I can select any individual object, or the parent. Note that I did opened all the group like I mentionned in my previous post.

The tree + object name seem to be the same as in the Inventor file.

Keep me posted, thanks !
