I'm trying to render a simple model with plain colors, black outline and very simple shadowing, just like you'd see in Sketchup.

But the render doesn't seem to keep the edge faces and the shadows and lightning seems off (just super bright).

Is there any way to render out an image that looks like this but in 3ds Max (example):

I already have the model made, but the render comes off looking very wrong.

I tried exporting the model into Sketchup but it didn't seem to import correctly.

Additionally, I tried just taking a screenshot but it doesn't look good at all.

Is there any way to produce a render in Max that looks like the image above?

no chance....you need a lot of work around to attained it. the image you posted was a raw grab/imported image from sketch up and not a rendered image.

Hi. Yes of course you can do that in 3dsMax. Have no idea why rendermaster are saying "no way", since it is in fact quite easy - when you first know how to do it. In fact there are more ways to do it. The "fastes" being using Nitrous "Stylized" presets (Graphite, Color Pencil, Ink etc.) - but you will need to find a script to tweek the settings to get a decent result. Then there's the "mr Contour Shaders" and Scanline/Standard "Ink&Paint", that can be used together if you're using the mr renderer.

Personally I mostly use multimaterials nested inside a Ink&Paint material rendered with mental ray (mr). I've attached a picture-example. There is a few tricks one need to know to make it work, but instead of trying to explain, I've attached an example file (max2014).

Hope it helps

wow that's so fast...my apology for my word NO CHANCE.

here is my work around...
1- apply gradient ramp material to the object.
2- apply uvw map modifier to the object then select face

here is the rendered image

i use scanline render only
