Hello, I had the same problem, I have a monitor G-Sync and a Nvidia Geforce 1080ti.

I had solved by changing the settings in my nvidia control panel, and had solved the lag or fps loss in the four viewports:

In global settings I have disabled "vertical sync: disabled" and "g-sync:enabled"

I do not know if for other people this solution works.

I think I have a solution for you. Stop rotating. Just kidding. Please list your system specs in your signature. That will be the first thing people ask you with this sort of problem. After you do that, we can start to evaluate the problem.

Dean

Yes, I believe that MAX 2017 and 2016 are indeed supported on Windows 10. I remember when Win 10 first came out there were a handful of threads where people were having problems with MAX. Those threads have since dried up. (So it seems)

If you have the time to reformat and load Win 7 (Or even partition and make a duel boot computer with win 7 and 10) that would help answer your question of OS. Its a time consuming route to go, but it is certainly not a usable program with the experience you are having.

*edit* I guess as a last resort before you do that, you could uninstall, reboot, reinstall MAX.

Is this a problem you run into all the time, or just this file? I'm guessing that its a problem with one of your items in the file. My gut tells me that its the CAD drawing in your file. Just for trouble shooting, start deleting items and spin the scene. You may find the problem child.

I have a very similar system- Xeon with same MB and a GTX 980TI with Windows 10 (though I have an Insider Build because I am part of the testing program). Anyway I haven't had any issues- all day today I've been working on models with millions+ polygons and I can move rotate etc..

This sounds less like and OS issue (though it could be) and more of a hidden hardware problem. I think you should double check that your graphics card is properly seated in the slot and getting enough power too. Look into if it's getting dirty or clogged by dust too. Lastly I always turn off Adaptive Degradation. This feature causes more problems than it "solves" IMO. This could be a power supply issue even?

Good thoughts. Make sure the computer has a power supply large enough for the graphics card. If the card needs multiple power cords hooked up to it, make sure it does. I agree with the adaptive degradation thing. Things run smoother with it off.

@Anonymous wrote:
Lastly I always turn off Adaptive Degradation. This feature causes more problems than it "solves" IMO.

Same here - with todays high performing GPU's the constant state switching is more likely to slow down the whole viewport performance. Of course with scenes containing thousands of individual nodes etc. it still has it's uses

Gladly this setting can be stored with the "maxstart.max" file and it's enabled state comes with the scene you load. At the same time this means that 3r party scenes mostly come with the adaptive degradation being enabled...

A scripted solution might use a scene load callback to set the AD targetFPS value to very low ( eg. viewport.SetAdaptiveDegGoalFPS 0) . This way adaptive degratation would NEVER kick in, as Max always could maintain the resulting framerate of 0.01 FPS

I wonder whether i should integrate this with my ShadedModeEnforcer script ...

Hi @elPanki,

I see there have been a lot of great suggestions here already! Could you tell me if you have Windows Automatic Updates on? Sometimes if the drivers are installed this way for your current hardware, say a graphics card, it can actually cause more issues than intended.

If nothing else has worked and no particular scene object is causing this lag we're seeing, I may suggest doing a clean uninstall of your drivers for your graphics card. The steps are listed on Nvidia's website.

You can then install the driver from Nvidia rather than the Window's Automatic Update, or if the driver was updated without first removing previous driver remnants it will take care of that as well.

Please let me know if this helps any. 🙂
