Hello All,

I'm an IT engineer with no real experience with 3DSMAX so please forgive my poor education on the product!

We are trying to work with designers using this software and bulk-move the data (assets) used in 3DXMAX project files.

We have copied the folders containing the assets to the new network path.

The plan is to move from a NAS on 192.168.2.251 to a file server (lets call it FILESERVER1). The IP address will not and cannot be the same though.

My understanding is that the project files point to assets which are generally located (or should be located) in the same folder as the project file.

However the reality is that they are using "shared" assets which are used by various different project files, and as such are spread throughout the network location in different folders.

Unfortunately the original network location was mapped by IP address (before we took over the IT infrastructure), so we need a way to change the paths of ALL assets from the IP address to the new file servers name. The subfolders (as in the rest of the path) will be identical.

The screenshot attached hopefully will clarify what we're trying to do.

As seen in the screenshot, we simply need to bulk change the \\192.168.2.251\ part to \\FILESERVER1\

So far the only way we have seen, is to open each project file, go to asset tracking, and edit each path of each asset individually, then save the project.

We can bulk-change the paths there, but only if the full paths are exactly the same (which most are not).

I understand there is a third-party script, but i believe this is just to find missing assets (which these are not).

We can run the NAS (on the IP address) for as long as we need to, therefore the assets are not yet "lost", but we need a solution to bulk-update to this new fileserver location.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for being a part of the community. I can move this message to the 3dsMax forum to see if they have any suggestions on the program side of things. This seems like both a program files issue and a file setup issue.

I hope this answered your question or resolved the issue, if so please click

Kudos or the "thumbs-up!" icon.

Did my response help resolve the issue? Please "Accept As Solution" to help others in the community.

Hello @Anonymous,

I see this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to follow up here with some tips for you regarding your issue. You are correct that the answer lies in the Asset tracker. If they all have the same common root, there is a command for that in 3ds Max called "Retarget Common Root" which will do exactly what you are asking here. This assumes that they all have the same prefix, if one element of the selected assets in the tracker doesn't the command goes gray and can't be clicked.

If you have a few stragglers that were different paths, you can select groups of them at a time with the same basic path and use "Set Path" instead of "Browse" to modify them as a group. I hope this helps.

Please hit the "Accept as Solution" button if my post fully solves your issue or answers your question. This lets me know that I was effective in helping you, and thank you for doing so.

Best Regards,
