Hey Alfred,

Thanks for your reply.

No plugins - Just vanilla max 24.

I don't think it would use 99% CPU power just trying to find a bad path or license.

I couldn't find a solution, therefore installed max 23 which runs smooth so far.

Hi there

I just installed 3dsmax 2024 and if I do simple things in the material editor, like assigning a material to a box, or rewiring a bitmap, max is unresponsive for minutes.

In the task manger I see that max uses all CPU power it can get (up to to 95%).

The machine I use is pretty beefy.

I already updated the graphics driver for my RTX 3090 Ti - Didn't change anything.

But since max uses the CPU in these situations, I think its not graphic card related.

Impossible to work like that - Any ideas?

Thanks!

Maybe it's trying to find bad paths or to access a web license for something and waiting for timeout. What plugins are you using?

Hmm, maybe a protection scanner is bugging out. The system might be interfering for some reason. Real time protection scanners might freeze up the threads while they try to figure out what is going on. But that's just a wild guess.

In Max 2024 the TX generation is ON by default, meaning each bitmap added in SME will be converted to TX format once. This may add a delay, depending on the size of the bitmap. Can you please turn the setting off, in Render Setup>Arnold Renedr>Textures>Auto-Convert Textures to TX, and see if it makes any difference?

Thank you!

Hey Giuseppe,

Thanks for your input!

I turned auto convert off and it felt better at first. Regular bitmaps and substances worked with no delay.
Color correct node also worked like a charm.

Then I dragged a composite node into the graph, connected the 2nd input (still all good).

But as I connected the composite node to the color slot of the PBR mat I had to wait for 2min again.

CPU was at 100%.

Interesting. Is this material applied to an object in the scene, and is the viewport set to High Quality?

Hey Giuseppe,

Alright, I found it! In the end it was really obvious, as often...

I work on a game environment and upped the viewport texture resolution to 8k to get the most out of the big aerial texture. Looks like the material editor does not like that 🙂

To sum it up: I got delays from 30-60s if connecting maps to a material that was assigned to an object.

If I just connected a bitmap it was around 30s, if I connected a composite map with two inputs, it was 60s.
It was also not really better in max23, which makes sense, since it was the same problem.

The solution was to reduce the viewport texture resolution to 512px again.

Thanks a lot for your effort. Your last question actually gave me the hint I needed.
Much appreciated!
