Windows 10

3dsmax 2017

VRay 3.40.03

Geometry Disappears in my view port, but renders the invisible objects fine. It's almost impossible to work like this. Any ideas as to what is going on? Is there an issue with XRefs and 3dsmax 2017? I've changed my drivers and nothing changes.

Thanks,

Charles

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community!

This is a bit strange, can you please describe the issue in a bit more detail? Are they never showing? Only when you zoom in? (That sort of thing.)

If you want, there is a free screengrabbing software called Screencast you can use to record an issue, if you find that easier/faster. You can find it here. It's pretty easy to use and might make it easier for me to help you with this issue.

Or, if you could attach a simple file(s) with this issue, I'd be happy to take a look personally.

Thank you very much for the screencast. That's odd. I will log this as a bug but I have a question or two. Does it happen when you use a different display driver? Does it only happen with huge scenes like the one in the video? (Maybe RAM related?) And lastly, what are your current system units?

Thanks.

It acts differently with other display drivers, but in every case we have missing geometry. It seems to happen on smaller screens as well. 2016 works fine on these large monitors. We have 128 GB of RAM, so I hope that's not the problem:) It doesn't seem to care if the scene is complicated or simple.

I'm using US Standard

Feet w/Decimal Inches

Set to Feet

International Lighting Units

Thanks again for your time,

Charles Crochet

Thank you for the information. Your listed units sound a lot like display units and not system units, can you confirm for me that those are the system units? I just wanted to be sure you weren't using inches/centimeters or something which may cause what you are describing. Thank you for taking the time to do so, this will be entered into the tracker once I have confirmation of the system units.

Hello @Anonymous,

No need to be sorry, this happens! Before I log this, I wonder if the problem is the scale of the system units. I've seen objects disappear when the units were too large for a selected object, but I've never seen the reverse. Let's try something to test just in case the problem is similar but reversed.

Given the large areas of the scene, the system units are a bit small. Lighting is faster with bigger scene units for scenes like this, so let's take a stab at adjusting those before we agree it's a bug. The downside to bigger system units though is if you zoom in one something to do tiny details, you may find that up close that the object disappears. You can use viewport clipping controls to get around that, or a 2nd copy of max for detailing small objects and merge them in. More info in below article.

Take a look at this article as it may solve this particular issue. This also goes over the viewport clipping if you are unsure about how that works. The area that is most important is the Rescale World Units toward the bottom. Basically, if we change the world units to feet, it'll scale objects up 12 times. (Since 12 inches are in a foot.) Then we need to scale the world down to match our change. So 1/12 = .0833. So, if we set the system units to feet we would then need to scale the world down from 1 to .08333 so that after the system unit change things are the right size.

If they still disappear after that, then I do need to log it as this is a problematic issue. But if this fixes it, then I think the problem came down to world units. Thanks for taking the time to transcribe those numbers and verify the world units for me.

Best Regards,

thank you, but, no, it doesn´t appear.

I´m guessing it´s a video card driver issue.

weird thing is that in 3dsmax 2016 was running fine.

well in this case go to customize menu, Preferences, viewports tab, click on Choose driver,

From the list choose a different graphic mode then the current one, starting from the upper ones down,

You need to restart max after,

If that solves it, then you need to update your graphic card's driver from the manufacturer site,

Or you can keep things the way they are and maybe loosing some benefits from the newest driver.
