Hi,

Long-term Max-user, but new to Max 2016, so forgive the slightly n00b topic here. In Max 2014 and earlier, I used to be able to use 'Right Click > Unhide by name' to bring up the Unhide Objects dialog, in which I could use the mouse cursor to drag select over multiple objects in my list and unhide them. As of 2015, I understand Autodesk have introduced a new Scene Explorer which "makes scene management easier". In which case, could somebody please inform me how I can still drag select multiple entries in the list in Scene Explorer/Unhide Objects to hide/unhide/select them in my scene? It seems as though I now have to click on each object individually with the mouse...surely I'm missing something exceptionally obvious?!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Jack

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

No worries, you can disable the scene explorer and go back to the old school list select. I work this way myself, so I understand exactly what your issue is with the scene explorer. To do this:

Go to: "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\defaults\MAX\CurrentDefaults.ini"

and change the following line:

SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=1

to
SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=0

While you're at it, you can get your old material map browser back by going to:

"C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\plugcfg_ln\SME.ini"

and changing the line

UseOldMtlBrowser=0
to
UseOldMtlBrowser=1

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best Regards,

Hi Alfred,

Thanks for this alternative - it certainly makes life a little easier! But wow - this certainly is the OLD school select list! It would've been nice to have somewhere between the two - the UI of the select list in the versions prior to 2015 was useful. But beggars can't be choosers!! Seems strange that this multiple drag-select is restricted in the newer versions though.

Anyway, thanks again - your help has been much appreciated!

Cheers,
Jack

Hello @Anonymous,

I prefer function over form personally but I can relate. A little secret is you can have this menu up at all times by setting a button somewhere with the following item.

Best Regards,
