Hello @Anonymous,

I recently replied to your post but I have made an edit to that post with more information. You may not get an email about the edits, so please check the thread. Long story short, I believe you are missing SP3 for 2016.

recently got 3dsmax and have been working on some .max files recently had the following error message pop up

now every time I open a max file I get this?!? I'm on windows 10 64 bit latest updates

@Anonymous: I have slightly edited this topic title to make it easier to find via search. Thanks for your understanding! -Alfred.DeFlaminis

that is a crash max wants to create a autoback of your file, that will be located in your documents folder under the 3ds max autoback all your autoback file are located there you can close that file down and reopen it from the autoback files. but if that countines to happen then it's likely the scene file or just one model

this is just a tip

what i usally do is match the units to the current scene and slowly merge the items one by one, if they all come in fine and the scene does not crash then you the file is fine, but if the scene file crashes then start again and then when you get to the last model and the file crashes then you know what is causing it don't merge that model. you will need to remodel the model.

save it as a new scene file and delete the old one,

i would recommed trying to merge one scene file into the new scene file if you have not tried that.

it could be a crash dump file because sometimes that will tell you what is causing the problem the only problem is unless your a expert you will not understand what is causing it, you would need to have the Debugging tool and the Debugging Symbol drectly from Mircosoft. there could be a number of things causing it.

the only way to create a crash dump file is force max to shut down by hitting ctrl alt and delete and and go to the task manger and RT or LT click on the 3ds max file, and it will give you a drop down menu it will ask you do create a dump file and then store it in a location but as i said you will need the above Debugging tool and the Debugging Symbol to understand what you are reading

it could be anything From the memory VGA card for example i would not recommend this unless you know how to read it and know what your doing!

Reinstalling Max should be your last resort, not first 🙂

You steps for solving should be the following list where you only move onto the next step after the first fails:

Make sure you have the latest service pack for Max

Temporarily uninstall any plugin you recently installed to see if it's the culprit

Temporarily move files out of the folders where MAXScripts are autoloaded from (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2017 - 64bit\ENU\scripts\startup and C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\scripts\Startup )

Go to your Max Project folder and rename maxstart.max to another name (if it exists) then restarting Max

Go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax and rename the folder that matches your version of Max to something like 2017 - 64bit Backup then restarting Max

Contact AD support

Only if all else fails consider re-installing Max

Hello @Anonymous,

I'd like to help you with this issue. Can you please let me know more about the files you are opening? Did you create them or did they come from elsewhere? If you were to open Max and make a teapot, save it and try to open it... does it work? Thanks for any more information you can give me. At first glance it seems like maybe you are missing a plugin that was important for the scenes and they are crashing as a result. That shouldn't happen, but occasionally it does. Also the advice by @lightcube is great, did any of that work for you? Can you please list your graphics card model for me?

Would it be possible to attach one of those files to a forum post, or PM me a link to one of them so I can investigate? Or I can create a private folder for you to upload to if that helps.

When Max crashes you often get a CER report box, if you put your email address in there I can search to see what happened when it crashed, and I am happy to do this for you. I checked the logs based on your forum email address and I do see two of them with some colorful comments. In this case you are getting a crash because those files used SP3 for 2016 but you must not have that installed. Is that possible?

@irishman_team_kilber

Technically I am support but I have sometimes sixty or more forum threads I'm working at any given time. This is why it takes me some time to get to these new threads, but I almost always do get there. You can also schedule a call as noted.

EDIT: Checked my notes, I have 60+ right now, not 100.

I'm facing the same issue and I have tried the following solutions :

1. Update my graphics card

2. Change my display driver

3. Renamed "2019-64 bit folder" in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax

5. Switched on Increment saving from the Preferences tab.

6. Reset Preferences.

7. Uninstalled and reinstalled 3ds max.

Also, I have a vray plugin.

If this information helps : I installed Vray as soon as installed Max about 5 months ago and these error messages have started showing just recently from about 2 weeks.

System configuration:

intel core i7

NVIDIA GeForce GTX950M with 4GB VRAM

16gb DDR4 Memory

1000GB HDD
