Maxscript callback - Known system exception

Hey Autodesk community,

I'm quite new to 3ds max. At the moment I need to use the viewport canvas to create a bitmap within 3ds max. The problem is that whenever I open the Viewport canvas, I get an error reading "--Known system exception.....The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access". It also brings up a MaxScript. After that when I try to click on 'color' or 'mask' under Brush Images tab, I get an error saying '--Syntax error: at end, expected <rollout clause> --In line:' I've posted screenshots of the errors below. I have also tried all other solutions offered in discussions of the same nature. I have seen discussions about Maxscript Callback errors that happen when they start up the app rather than for Viewport canvas specifically. Of course, I tried the solutions but none worked. Please help me.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

Can you please tell me more about your system setup? (OS, Graphics card, etc.) Are you running Max via a virtual machine? Can you try running as administrator for me, please? Also, can you try changing your display driver to DX9?

Do you already have a texture plugged in when you go to use the viewport canvas? If so, the compression type may not be supported so it may be worth trying a different format for the texture in Viewport Canvas. Thanks for any additional information.

Hey Alfred,
Thanks for replying. I'm on Windows 10 on a laptop with a core i7 and gtx
970m. I'm not near my pc right now so I can't change to dx9. I'll try that
soon as I get back. Also the problem happens even after I just start 3ds
max. So it happens even when I haven't loaded any textures.

This is an update.

I just switched to dx9 but the same thing happens. Soon as I start up max and try to open viewport canvas the same error happens. When I load up the files I want to use the same thing happens.

Thank you very much for the information and for reporting that back to me. I wonder if somehow your user settings have been corrupted, can you please try resetting them for me? Also, can you please let me know which service pack/update you are currently using? If you haven't installed any service packs, please check the Desktop Application or manage.autodesk.com to see if there are any available service packs. Thank you very much for trying those two things.

No, resetting did not help at all. Also, before posting here, when I first
encountered the problem, I had not installed any updates. So I'd gone ahead
and updated to service pack 3 and still experienced the same problem. So I
uninstalled max and reinstalled it again, this time I haven't updated it
yet. But there's still that same problem

Just to verify, you did rename the ENU folder (while Max was closed) and restarted Max to generate a new one? Which version of Windows is this? (If 10, which version of 10? Home, professional, etc.)

The exception access violation could be any number of things on the system. Corrupted Windows registry, installation error, hardware conflict, virtual memory corruption... basically it points toward a system problem. Have you tried reinstalling your graphics drivers? Sometimes Data Execution Prevention can interfere. You could have some bad ram or even a bad driver for a peripheral. (Try unplugging unneeded devices.) The error itself is usually a system problem but from my end it's almost impossible to tell what is causing it. Since resetting the user settings didn't work, the cause is likely outside of Max. You could check your event viewer logs for clues too or post them and I'll look. .
