3DS Max Asset Library 2017 Startup Error

I was using an earlier version of Asset Library (2016) without issue then upgraded to 2017 1.4.88.0. This version was fine for a while then I received attached error message. I noticed a newer version 1.5.41 and installed that hoping it would solve the issue. I have tried Repair, Uninstall and reinstalling all versions without solution.

I have 3DS Max 2015 and 2017 installed.

First, I'd like to apologize that you experienced such a long delay before you got a reply here. I'd like to help find an answer for you. Are you still having this issue?

I have not seen this particular message before and I have emailed some people on my end to look for more information. I will update this thread when I get that information. In the meanwhile this link has more information including something we should try here, detailed below.

Please try to delete the following directories:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3ds Max Asset Library\cache\cache

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3ds Max Asset Library\cache\GPUCache

Additionally, if you have Dell backup and recovery. v. 1.7.5.64 installed, it will cause the Asset Library not to launch. Upgrade to newer version of the Dell backup and recovery and it will be fine.

Can you please try those things for me while I am looking for more information? Thanks!

Hello Alfred,

I'm now in conversation with Jon Bell regarding this issue since I wasn't sure I would get a reply on the forum.

I do have Dell Backup & Recovery, but I checked and it's a newer version.

I've renamed the folders you suggested I delete, but no change. I'll keep checking in with Jon.

I understand. I am sorry it took me as long as it did to reply, the forums have been very busy and I try to answer these posts in order. I got an email from a software engineer on the Asset Library about this, and I am pasting that info below. I will also forward this to Jon.

"The user might have ended up with a corrupted database. We can try to fix the database manually for the user, but this will mean we would see the indexed data i.e filenames, local paths and collection names but not the actual content of those files. If the user is OK with that, they can send us the following file :

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\3ds Max Asset Library\indexer.sqlite

(this file should not be shared via the forums but only through a private channel)

The other alternative would result in data loss:

All added content folders will be lost (+ tags and custom thumbnails), user will have to manually re-add them
All created collections will be lost, user will have to manually re-create them

If user is ok with that, they can simply rename the following folder

"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\3ds Max Asset Library"

into

"LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\3ds Max Asset Library (corrupted)"

When they start the 3dsMax Asset Library, this will re-create the database from scratch."

Hi @EC_SB I'm one of the PMs on the 3ds Max product team. Can you verify that removing or renaming the entire AppData folder fixes the issue? In addition, we'd love to check out the folder if you would like to share it with us so we can hopefully avoid this in the future.

I just had a chance to rename the folder as suggested. 3DS Max Asset Library is now starting up as normal (without custom collections, as was mentioned would be lost). If this worst of it is to recreate my collections, so be it.

@electrotoast_old, Perhaps I can upload relevant files under Case #: 12990243 ? You can contact me through there.

Thanks for the update and information! I have set up a private folder for you if you'd like to upload your files there. You should get an email about it shortly, and if you don't see it please check your SPAM folder. These files are private and will not be shared with anyone but yourself and the support staff. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please use at least an 8 character password or the Box account may not work properly.

Hi @Alfred.DeFlaminis,

I've uploaded indexer.sqlite to box folder. (I compressed to zip, still comes in at 500 MB). I was able to recover some collections as I had exported them to a network drive with the intention of sharing with my coworkers.

Hello @EC_SB,

After reviewing the file you updated it became clear to the devs that there was an issue in the Library that needed to be updated. This is already done and is undergoing testing currently. There should be a new version on the store soon that will prevent this issue in the future. I can't reveal release dates on it but it should be very soon. Thanks!
