Hello,

Very new to the community. I've purchased a model to use in a project that I'm work on. But the possed model I need is .max.

I just need to bring the file into my scene in Keyshot, but .max in not accepted in Keyshot 5. I'm trying to convert the .max into .obj file.

I've tried loading 3ds Max, but could not successfully do it. Is there anywhere, or anyway to get the files convert to .obj?

thank you for any help

Cannot you find a plugin that will convert max files into OBJ? the best you can do is attach the file then hope someone will convert it over & give the version number you have of the max file

@Anonymous

Keyshot does accept DFW, FBX DWG STL and OBJ the same that are in KS extentions. here is a link https://blog.keyshot.com/2013/keyshot-integration-how-many-3d-file-formats-does-keyshot-support.

why cannot you import it into 3ds max maybe its you who are doing something wrong Tony

why don't you download 3ds max student version and then import your scene into max as long as you don't go againist the T&C while you have the student version, of making profit from the student version then you should be good

I am confused about this question really! if Ks does accept OBJ as the link shows then why are you saying "it does not accept OBJ"

drovani, many thanks for this solution! There has been a crying need for a standalone MAX converter ( as evidenced by the first post in this thread is dated 2017!). Autodesk has been suspiciously silent and evasive on the issue. The link is in Portuguese, so I'll need to investigate further, but it looks as though the solution will work.

best regards, David

UPDATE: The on-line file converter linked by the previous post has a maximum file size of 50 MB. I plan to contact the owners to see whether this limit can be increased, to allow more files to be converted.

Dear Alfred,

I red your message and found it useful. I feel lucky because I have a .max (about 2GB) file which can't be opened or merged into a new file. There're animation and phoenixfd in it. I want to send it to you to fix it. If you can't fix it, I want it to be converted to .fbx file.

If you think it's ok, I'll send the file to you.

Even now there is no reliable way to convert this even with a student version and its frustrating as hell. You can try the online conversion services but it will not always yield a good result. And its well over 200 bucks for just one month of using 3ds max. It really feels like an unfair business practice since .max files from way back when are all over the industry. Best just to find a friend or someone who can convert these for you.

Well thank you for that reply and I had no idea that was available - it seems like fair price at $290 per year.

Right now though I do not need 3ds max for an entire year.

However if I just needed to convert about - 30 files, which might take only a day, is there an option through some sort of support service, or a 1 day access, which even at full price would be less than 10 bucks?

I've actually been meaning to contact someone at Autodesk to see if such a solution is available.
