Ive discovered that removing the rungs from the model, the cylinders in the gap, make it selectable again. I don't know whats special or wrong about them to cause this, and this isn't a fix because I need those rung models, but something about them is the cause for the non-selectability.

Max 2017. Hidden objects are blocking selection of visible objects. This occurs even in sub element mode or in poly select mode, even when the offending mesh is hidden. I have no idea why this is occurring or how to fix it, but its extremely detrimental to my work flow.

Pictured here and here

https://gfycat.com/DistortedMerryHomalocephale

https://gfycat.com/RegularFlamboyantBoutu

I've tried searching this issue but I found no other results.

I can't figure out how to edit my post on this site so I did more testing, and the problem is getting stranger and stranger.

Ive tried deleting the faces and remaking, didn't help. I tried creating a new mesh and attaching the old one to it, didn't help. I tried resetting xform, didn'tIf I delete the mesh and model in a new one, that one spot still doesn't allow selecting. If I delete every other model in the scene, that stop doesn't allow selection. If I detatch the model to another object, I CAN select it at the same location, but not when I re-attach it. If I move the model around, it doesn't matter where in space it is, still can't select that one spot. I exported the entire scene and I still can't select that one spot on the model.

If I select all of the elements of the model and move them around, I still cant select that spot. Moving around that center rectangle seems to change the location of the 'spot' where I cannot select things.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

Can you please let me know which service pack/update you currently have installed? There was an issue that was fixed in Update2 which seems similar to the problem in your first video. For the second one, I think maybe the normals are inside out for your object, that would cause this problem. Can you please check that for me? If that fails, any chance I could get my hands on the file? You could attach it, PM me a link, or I could create a private folder for you if needed. Thanks!

Best Regards,

Hey Alfred. At the time I was just using basic 2017 because It was a fresh
install without updates yet. I've since moved up to SP3 and I forget what
version or patch I'm on now, I think latest? I was working around the bug
for now, I'll see if I can reproduce it and if I can, I'll send you the
file.

Hello @Anonymous,

Are the normals inside out on the object? Could be the base cause. The latest update is called update 2. The progression is as follows: SP1, SP2, SP3, Update1, Update2. The naming convention has been changed because it was confusing to some people, so for 2017 it's a bit extra confusing because SP3 is actually not as up to date as Update 2. Moving forward, this won't happen anymore in future versions, it will be a linear progression. That being said, can you check to see if you have Update 2? You can see in Control Panel->Add Remove Programs-> View Installed Updates. Thanks for checking! I can create a private folder if you'd like to upload the file into.

Best Regards,
