Most of the 3ds MAX help specifies that Metal Ray must be used when rendering point clouds. With Mental Ray removed from 3ds MAX 2018 what renderer supports point clouds?

Thanks;

Nick

I had found that particular post previously and it again states to use Mental Ray. I have done searches both in the forums and out and have not found anything particular to 2018. I have tried several point clouds in 2018 with no success - but have had no problems with earlier versions. Not sure what I am missing.

Nick

NVIDIA Mental Ray for 3ds Max 2018 (Windows) link http://www.nvidia.com/object/download-mental-ray.html

not sure if this is a trial or full version because i still use max 9. you need to fill out the application and then check/tick the 3ds max 2018 version as you know

Hello @Anonymous,

First, I'd like to apologize that you experienced such a long delay before you got a reply here. I realize this thread is old, but I wanted to follow up here. Previously it was Mental Ray that was used for rendering the point clouds and as they are updating it some class ID's were changed which did cause a problem with rendering the point clouds. Info here. You may try those instructions to see if the point clouds were addressed by the fix mentioned in the top post.

Otherwise, you are correct there isn't currently a default renderer that handles the point clouds. I have created an improvement request in the tracker with a link to this thread so this issue can be looked at by development. If the MR update above doesn't fix it, I'd have to recommend to look at 3rd party renderers.

EDIT: I have 'Accepted as Solution" on this, but I do realize it's not a solution. It's more of an 'answer' about what happened, what to try, and what actions I have taken in the meanwhile. Thank you.

Best Regards,
