3DS Max 2018 can't change button appearance

We've just updated to 3DS Max 2018 and are in the process of adding buttons for scripts etc. but for some reason we can no longer right-click to change the button appearance.

I just found this out as well. When creating a custom toolbar even the functions with designated icons still appear as text. It is also not possible to delete buttons. It would be even better if we could drag the buttons to reorder them and then lock the state of the toolbar so they cant be moved accidentally.

You can still move and delete buttons, hold alt and then click/drag to move them around and just drag them off of the toolbar to delete. We just can't rename buttons or assign icons...

It is a little frustrating that an age-old function of Max is suddenly broken because of the service pack though...

I can unfortunately confirm this on my system too. Even tried resetting to factory defaults and creating a new toolbar to test with -- and nothing happens when I right-click on the new custom button.

Maybe it's due to changing the UI to "QT" driven? The files (like *.cuix, *.kbdx) are XML, so perhaps there's a workaround by editing the XML file?

Have not yet tried that...

I wouldn't even know where to begin with XML files...The only consistent workaround I've found is by creating macros for the scripts I need but I then can't edit them once they're placed...hugely frustrating!

Yes, this is a frustrating issue that is tied to Update1. This has been logged and it's listed as critical in the tracker. I am going to mark this post as an "Answer" though I realize this isn't a solution. I just want others to be able to find this post easier so that there is no confusion about it.

Main menu > Customize > Preferences > General tab and under the UI DIsplay section on the right, you can uncheck "Fixed Width Text Buttons" or set it to a higher number of pixels.

@Anonymous unfortunately the problem isn't due to button width, it's the fact that I can't actually change the text on the buttons so anything dragged to the toolbar that doesn't contain the macro information within the script just shows up as "macro 1", "macro 2" etc.

I had the same problem but I've just installed update 2 and it is now fixed indeed. 🙂
