topic Relative path creation bug? in 3ds Max Forum

Hi, I'm an IT admin trying to help a colleage with a Max issue, hopefully someone on here can help!

We're re-organising our file storage, and to help make projects portable between different staff we want to use relative paths in asset manager, however Max seems to be creating very inneficient paths which won't work across devices.

We have our .max file in a project folder, and then for example 'models' folder within the same folder containing model files. I would expect the relative path to generate simply 'models/filename' but instead we get '../../../../../all the way back to the drive root/subfolder/subfolder/subfolder/models/file'. If we manually edit the path in Max it respects the correct path and finds the assetts, however this will take a long time! Is it possible that we've missed something in the config and we can correct this behaviour?

Hi,

There is a very good plugin for handling all aspects of 3DSMax scene files here: https://www.pixamoon.com/product-page/library-track-relink

Perhaps it might be handy in your case? Seems very comprehensive.

Regards,

Thanks, I will have a look at that software. Does this behaviour not constitute a bug however? While it is possible to overcome by paying for extra third party software it would be better for the core product to simply generate an efficient relative path?

So does all staff not have access to the same mapped network paths?
Why can you not simply use absolute paths? Are some staff in a different location?

Hi, thanks for your reply and concern, however the issue here is the software not producing an efficient relative path, rather than a teardown of business practices 🙂
