3DConnexion drivers for 3DS Max 2018 available

Just wanted to post this in case people haven't noticed yet.

3DConnexion has finally posted an official driver that supports 3DS Max 2018.

You can download it from their driver page here.

Hope that will make some people happy and able to upgrade.

I can't say if it works sadly, as i have an old spacepilot (not the pro) and they seem to have really dropped support on that one now as it isn't recognized anymore.

Guess it's time to get a newer one.

@brentscannell, managed to round up a spacenavigator and can confirm the driver works.

Guess it's a fair warning to people with the older devices, there's a big chance they really won't work anymore this time.

(instead of being unsupported)

Still, happy i won't have to use they keyboard and mouse to navigate 3d space anymore.

I have a SpaceMouse Wireless. I installed the current 3DConnexion driver. As soon as I did, I could no longer launch 3ds Max. It is weird. I try to launch 3ds Max and get the spinning circle cursor for a moment and then nothing. When I uninstall 3DConnexion, I am able to launch 3ds Max. I have tried this several times. Each time, the experience is the same.

I have Windows 10 (updated to current), 3ds Max 2018.2 and tried the newest 3DConnexion driver from their site.

I noticed the same behavior on one of my machines but I tried it on several others, as well as asked some colleagues and we could not reproduce it. I will log it in our bug tracking system.

Would you mind sharing your system specs? I had issues on my Razer laptop running Win10.

My desktop specs are as follows:

Intel Core i7-5960X (8 core 3.0 Ghz)

64GB RAM

(2) NVidia GTX 1080Ti Graphic Cards (11 GB GDDR5X each) [Not in SLI configuration]

Windows 10 Creators Update (updated to current through automatic updates)

Autodesk Media and Entertainment Collection products (Maya 2018, 3ds Max 2018, Mudbox 2018 and Motionbuilder 2018). All of these are updated to current. I do not have any earlier versions installed.

I should also note that I have current Wacom drivers installed as well.

Hello all,

This is a bit of a strange issue and may be something to report to Wacom since the script is from them, but I wanted to suggest something that may help. We had an issue a while back where the actual location of the driver script would prevent the Scene States Manager from coming up for some people, and one customer was able to find a work around.

If this fails, please ask on Wacom forums about this and I will also continue the discussion on this end internally. Replace "C:" below with whatever drive you installed Max to. To put it shortly, please try the following.

Cut/Remove the Wacom script from following locations if it exists there:

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\3DxStudio.bundle\Contents\scripts

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\scripts\Startup

Paste the script here instead: You would then have to activate the script manually.

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\scripts

I'm not sure if this will fix this problem but please try it. If that fails, I would be greatly appreciative of any CER logs submitted with your forum email addresses or a copy of your event view logs for the devs to see the exact problem. Thank you all very much.

Hi @Alfred.DeFlaminis,

I have 3ds Max 2018 and Maya 2018. It appears that 3DConnexion has installed their bundle in the following directory on Windows 10

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins

With this installation, 3ds Max 2018 will not launch. Additionally, Maya 2018 will intermittently crash.

I sent a copy of my event files to your email address. Please let me know if you do not get them.

Thank you very much @JabbaTheNut, these logs are very helpful.

It appears that the drivers are conflicting with that .dll which causes the crash. I am communicating internally with the devs about it and I'll update here when I know more. From what I'm hearing these two things are both trying to register the same internal codes which is causing the problem. I'm waiting for feedback on this but I will update asap.

Hello @JabbaTheNut,

The developers have identified the problem and are going to make a change on this end as well as alert peripheral device makers about this to help them avoid it as well. Technically it's not a bug in either program, it's a rare occasion where somehow multiple parties are using the same ID for internal mechanics. That's a bit of a simplified explanation but hopefully you get the gist. I'll update the thread when I know more. (Keep an eye on drivers on your end as well, please.)

I have installed the latest drivers, but the 3D mouse behaviour in max 2018 seams a bit unstable, for small objects moves to fast even if I drop the speed..

A small touch in the mouse and shakes quite a lot.

Any suggestion?

@luismestre I don't really know much about 3D mouse issues, so all i can do is tell you what my settings are and give a few suggestions.

My settings are totally default though, but maybe you can change the overall speed + the speed in the advanced settings to tone it down for you.

(actually, maybe the reverse on all directions isn't default but i can't remember...)

Other than that, all i can suggest is to try and see if re-calibrating your device has any influence, but i don't expect it will do much...

Hope this helps a bit.

I have the settings like shown in your screeshots but looks like 3D Max can't handle very small objects ( cube 0.2mx0.2mx0.2m).

Ah ok, 0.2 meter?
If you're working with objects of that size, maybe you should change the display unit scale to cm or even mm... (Customize > Units setup)
I wonder if that would help with the spacemouse issue...

There is a minimum pixel size that an object must be on creation (3x3 pixels of mouse movement), but there is also a minimum size limitation as well. The minimum size limitation is being looked at currently be development, but the 3x3 pixel requirement is deep in the heart of Max and won't be changed. Using a smaller system unit for the time being would be necessary until that is addressed. So this issue likely has nothing to do with the mouse.
