Hello,

I have 2 problems with OBJ and FBX exports.

1. When importing FBX high en low poly in 3rd party software (Substance or Knald) 9/10 the high or low poly have a different location which makes it impossible to extract high poly data from low poly mesh. It also happens when using Xform and centering the pivot/axis.

When i models something in Max i export it as a OBJ to Headus UV Layout to unwrap and then import it back to Max. i think that gives some problems but cant figure it out..

2. When i want to bake my maps in OBJ instead of FBX with Substance or Knald, then the location is spot on, but.... i get small black artifacts/spots in my model..

Does anyone have a solution or similar problem? Please let me know because this drives me crazy.

Thank you!

It sounds like the origins of the models are differing? From what I'm reading here, that's my first thought (the misalignment and the black spots from a bad bake). Are your models zeroed out in their axis (say their origin is set to their feet, and the transform is 0,0,0)?

A trick I've had to use before (even when xForm fails me)...create a box and zero it's origin out, convert to editable poly and attach a mesh (say your low poly mesh), then go into element selection and delete the box. In your case can create a duplicate of the box first, and then use each to snag the two meshes.

Thank you for your reply. I will try the "box" idea tomorrow.

The strange thing about the OBJ is that he bakes the edges smoothly like the FBX does but the problem is more on the "surface" of the mesh.

Low and high are both clean but i will provide a screenshot when it occurs.

Thank you.

I provided 2 screenshots of the OBJ bake. On the backside you can see the spots i was talking about. The front side is clean.

It looks like that might be pinching to me...if someone in the studio here showed me that bake that's what I'd assume I'd find in their mesh.

Have you tried adjusting the cage settings for your bake? If you're up for it I'd be happy to check the files out, see if I can't find it on my end.

Hello @Anonymous and welcome to the community,

If you reset your Xform and collapse it, then set your pivot and export does it help? Can you please attach 2 simple example objects so I can take a closer look? Thanks!

Sounds to me like an XForm issue. (I know you mentioned you're using it.) I bake out objects in substance daily coming from Max and I haven't run into this problem. I'm sure we can solve it but some example objects would make that a lot easier.

Best Regards,
