Simulation do not use GPU

Hi,

I am not a 3DS MAX user, however I am testing that for GPU performance measurements. I have a file and opened it in the 3DS MAX 2018. I went to the Modifier and then Plane. Then I changed the Length segs and Width segs (both are 100). Next, I went to Cloth and clicked on Simulate while the Progress has been checked.

Now, it seems that the job is running on CPU only. According to the GPU-Z application, the GPU load is 0 and all core and memory clocks are idle (lowest value). After 10 minutes, the frame progress is 26/100 which clearly states that GPU is off!

How can I force 3DS MAX to use GPU? The GPU is a Quadro M2000?

Well I have the same problem. I have a nvidia gtx 1060 and i'm seeing that it is not being used. I hope someone helps us.

In the Nvidia catalog, the 3DS MAX is listed as one of the applications that use GPU features. Hope that we receive a reply from experts.

Just because the brochure says it uses "GPU features" doesn't mean that every part of the program does. Grabbing a quote from that link (under the "Supported features" column):

2D/3D display of designs, interactive 3D presentation with realistic materials, rendering-ray tracing.

The 2000 series is pretty much bottom-of-the barrel for the Quadro line. You probably wouldn't get much out of it anyways.

So, is there any tutorial for them?

Also, M2000 has roughly 700 cores. So, definitely it should be faster than the main multicore cpu. Isn't that?

Hello @Anonymous and @Anonymous,

Currently cloth is simulated by the CPU. There is no way to force the GPU, the hardware acceleration button is not fully implemented.

My best suggestion is to submit a Feature Request. If you do, please post the link in here so others that find this thread can vote easily. I'll vote as well.

You can't directly compare CPU cores and those on a GPU. They follow different instruction sets, while the CPU has fewer in number it does generic calculations much better.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any clear documentation which states which plugin or toolset on 3ds max currently uses GPU?

Not that I am aware of @Anonymous. I know various renderers may have GPU utilization and the viewports now use more GPU starting in 2017, but Max isn't fully optimized to use the GPU in this manner yet for cloth and physics.
