indeed if the geometry was dodgy i wouldnt have posted anything about it -
but this happens even when the geometry is not problematic. I will find a
file to share some time in near future.

I am importing some simple objects from SKP - simple pieces of furniture like some shelving, wall cabinet etc. Just basic linear geometry. It generally looks OK as far as geometry goes. Time & time again (say, 25% of the time) when I STL check a piece of geometry (even if it has no errors) it will crash max - no warning and no error reporting option - max just bombs out completely. This is in the latest version of 2018.

Also (very minor thing) noticed that when in sub-object edit mode on a mesh, the shortcut keys dont work like they used to. For example, hitting "1" does not take you out of vertex mode like it should do. or maybe it never did. not sure - it just seems odd.

Hello @Anonymous,

I love SketchUp but it does create some invalid and bad geometry. Rats nests, duplicate faces, and inverted crossed faces seem to be a staple. In another thread someone mentioned exporting as other formats may help, or you can run the SKP through CleanUp3 or something other Sketchup plugins. I usually have to rebuild a fair amount of models from SketchUp.

Is the geo that causes the crash something you can share?

Best Regards,

That's fair @Anonymous, my fault. I go into autopilot sometimes....

Thanks for posting an example file when you get a chance.

anhow your probably right - it'll be something to do with the imported geometry, but it looks so benign. Some of the objects have no more than 78 vertices (52 after welding them). Another thing that happens, if i put a xform reset modifier on top of said item & then right click "collapse to", Max bombs out with no warning. Once ive retired i should be able to find time to upload some examples.....
