Hi,

I'm trying to export objects from a max file so I can import them with the materials into Blender. How do I convert the materials to standard materials? I've included an example file.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi,

It's been a while since I used a material converter script (I use Corona render and it has a very easy conversion routine)... so I'm not sure how good this one is... but you could always give it a go:

Just to make sure you realise, The Corona converion will only convert to Corona Materials. And then you will be truely stuck, trying to convert Corona to Standard.

In my opinion you'd be better off going down the list and testing scripts out (in a 'Save As' version of your scene, keep the original safe).

Would this example be typical of something you want to convert? I ask because this one seems to have Vray materials, which I'm not sure would convert cleanly to standard materials.

Hi. There is a commercial script called UMC, that converts both VRay, Corona, mr and AutodeskMaterials (+ more) to standard materials (scan line). I use it myself, and it works OK.

Here is a link: http://www.3dstudio.nl/webshop/product/1-universal-material-converter

Hope it helps

To convert materials from almost any render to Standard materials, you can use the "V-RayMax Converter PRO" plugin:

"V-RayMax Converter PRO - the Autodesk® 3ds Max script for converting materials, maps and other scene components (lights, cameras, modifiers, proxy, render elements, etc) from various render engines to V-Ray and from V-Ray to Corona Renderer, and also for converting V-Ray and Corona materials to Standard (Default Scanline) materials (which is very useful for game developers, 3d modelers, etc)."

More detailed information about "V-RayMax Converter PRO" here: https://maxtools.3dzver.ru/vmcpro
or here: https://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/v-raymax-converter-pro

I will 2nd this, Max Converter PRO works pretty nicely. I've used it for years and have used various similar ones but I keep coming back to this one. It's a little pricy but worth it if you are a production artist.

If you have just a couple of materials, you can do it by hand. It's not too hard to do. But it can take a lot of time to do it if you have a lot of materials.
