Hi,

Rolling back to update 3 apparently solved some of the problems for a lot of users.

As for myself, I just went back to 2015 for the time being ...

Good luck,

Tudor

selection/viewport/command bug in Max 2018 related to the command panel

Hello everyone,

Upgrading (or at least trying to) from 2015 to 2018, I came across a very weird bug that I'm going to try to describe below.

It seems that quite often Max requires an extra right click into a viewport so that a basic command/shortcut can become active.

Here are a few scenarios in which it happens:

- in an empty scene I create a box; after I click W (for select and move); nothing happens; I right-click in the viewport, hit W again, now my object is selected with the move gizmo active.

- I'm editing a poly and I select an edge, let's say. I'm already on move (I have the active gizmo), but I want to change to rotate and I hit E - nothing happens; I right-click in the viewport, hit E again, now I'm good to go.

Basically it seems as if Max waits for a confirmation on my behalf in order to make a command active - right click in viewport works, Enter/Esc keys do nothing. These were only 2 examples with default Max shortcuts, but I tend to be a shortcut freak (have a num pad on the side full of them) and it drive me nuts, needing to right click in order to make the shortcut work.

After a lot of trial and error, time wasted and nerves mounting I found where it comes from, but not how to solve it. I usually have my command panel un-docked on a second monitor (I tried with the max window and the command panel on the same monitor, it's the same thing). After docking the command panel things turn to normal, everything works as expected - I don't need to right click in order to get a command/shortcut to work.

I have the latest nvidia drivers (for a Quadro K4200) and the latest .4 Max upgrade. I have tried the various display drivers (Nitrous, Legacy3d), same thing - docking the command panel solves the problem. Unfortunately space wise the solution doesn't help too much, and even if I extend my max window to the second monitor in order to have a similar layout as with the un-docked panel, I'm stuck with icons/menus I don't see in the lower corner since my two monitors are not the same size.

Any ideas/suggestions/anything 🙂 would be much appreciated,

Best regards,

Tudor

Yes, and its driving me mad. I can't get anything done.

For me it started with version 2018.4, For me this is a big productivity problem

I also have command panel on another screen, same as you, with K2000 gfx card. Generally redocking (and using up my space!!) works, although in some editable splines, an additional click is still required to toggle out of sub object mode. Thanks for the tip on the docking though - this will help me a lot until they fix it.

R

Hello Tudor,

I'm new to this Max Forum. I was wondering if your issues has been solved. I've been using Max 2016 no problem but moving on to 2018 has given me similar problems. Most of the basic shortcuts like "T" for Top, "P" perspective are not functioning properly. I checked the Customize User Interface to see if they got deleted somehow but it didn't.

Has anyone helped you on this? I need help too!

Let me know thank you.

-M

Has there been any development on this?

I've come from max 2016 where I shortcut a fair amount - nothing extreme; just snaps, lock selection, wireframe etc. and find this issue very disruptive.

Basically, it happens for any keyboard input for me, even delete, and am only able to perform any keyboard task with mouse interaction into the viewport. I've found the least impactful way of allowing me to use keyboard shortcuts is to middle mouse to pan the tiniest of amounts before pressing the key.

I too like my command panel undocked. Due to what appears to be a re-jig of the way panles are docked (in columns rather that tiles) this makes a massive waste of screen space, for me.

Not ideal 😞
