Thank you for your answer!

Translation animation did not work, as @wbl.jbs said vertex animation is not supported. I did do it with bones in the end thou.

I'm trying to export a simple cube deformation animation, but after 2 days of research couldn't find the problem. The cube expands on X-axis, shift sides on y axis and then scales down. After exporting as fbx, and reimported in 3dsmax (or Unity) only the expanding on x-axis remains animated

The animation is baked and tried all possible export settings combination.

What am I doing wrong?

The animation is simple enough to do without the use of scaling. Try mimicking the motion via the translation of vertices. Attached is a QAD version. Try export/import with this and if it works you can make a more accurate version.

Vertex animation from fbx isn't supported in Unity.

You can use Morph targets: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/HOWTO-ImportObjectMax.html
