3ds max 2018, how to remove outline around shape?

Hi all, just downloaded this monster today so just call me newb, noob, nub....whatever you want.

Anyways, I have slightly dabbled in 2017 version before but did not have this issue.

My shape in viewport has a white outline around the sides, I can move the shape around and the outline stays around whatever happens to be the sides of the shape at that time. Is there a way to remove this?

Also, I'm getting some kind of weird dark lines zigzagging the shape. I think it might have something to do with the way shadows are casted but what do I know. Is there a way to disable shadowing in the viewport? They tend to make things hard to see when I'm trying to get up close in curvy areas.

Hi,

For the outline press j on the keyboard,

for the shadowing right click top left corner, as shown in the photo below, and choose Standard

If it is the white bounding box, do as miledrizk says and hit 'J'. If it is the outline/overlay that is now found with newer versions of Max that are bothering you (I know I hate them when doing detailed work), go to Customize > Preference > Viewports, and in the section 'Selection/Preview Highlights', you can turn them on or off anyway you like.

For the shadows, turning to Standard works with simple scenes. As soon as you start adding details or lots of geometry. It breaks down and still ends up trying to shade even though it shouldn't. The fix, choose Performance instead of standard. Then reopen that menu, and go down to the Materials section, and check Enable Transparency (if you use Alt+X or have transparent materials), and check Override Off. This will get rid of those pesky shadows, and you won't get the weird shading errors that can happen sooner or later using Standard. You can also set this for all viewports at the same time by setting it in the Per-View Presets, and check Apply to All Views

Thanks guys, that did the trick. And, it was the outline, not the brackets.

Outline gone, weird ziggy zaggy blurry shadowy lines gone, shadows overall mostly gone but so far very workable.

Now for where I put that tutorial section....
