3dsmax 2019 comma/dot

Hi,

Again, new version give problem to use dot and not comma in numeric fields.

I have 2018 installed on same PC and no problem, I can use dots.

With 2019, sometimes it is dots, sometimes comma,.. in same session.

I was happy to see that plugins for 2019 were available very quickly, but this is a nightmare to have this numeric problem.

Thanks for coming to the forums with your question! That numeric naming issue sounds really frustrating, I have a few questions so i can figure out how to best help you.

Is this issue only present when you type into boxes to set numeric field perimeters? Or does it show up somewhere else in 3DS Max 2019 as well?

Is this causing issues with scene conversion, or is it your preferred workflow that it's disrupting? (both equally important)

yes, but I don't know where it could be present elsewhere.

I solve this, temporarily, like this :

- quit max

- change in regional and language option to comma, and back to dot. apply change, apply change.

- reopen max.

sometimes it works, sometimes not.

When installing new soft on computer, sometimes max switch to comma again.

Using numeric keypad is very handy... with comma its impossible.

I already open a thread complaining about the same issue, with no luck and one another is also talking about this creating problem with bifrost too.

Basicly every user using windows in non native use of decimal seaprator '.', will have the issue if they change the decimal separator in region setting to use '.' (to make consistant workflow and experience, with other packages, 3dsMAX GUI/MXS, etc), so in fact in near most of native windows language.

This happen in MAX everywhere, except in MXS (in MXS this is '.' and nothing else, so it sound logical to use '.dot' and not ',coma' for having a consistant workflow).

To be clear :
-> this happen only with every windows, using ',' (coma), and not '.' in default region settings (near all Africa, Canada, Europe, south America… a few ones)

   ° If user keep the coma as default, no problem, but will not be able to use the numerical pad to make the decimal separator, but MXS will use '.' (dot) and list separator become ';' not ',' .
   ° If user change region setting to use '.', that's when problems start, making max everywhere in the UI to randomly switch from '.' to ',' , so user can only keep typing the value, until max accept it.
   ° Using ',' create more problems, specially when dealing with scenes done with the '.' using expression (exchange with other 3dsMAX users using '.', custum controller , thinkingParticles, etc..)

It happen everywhere inside 3dsMAX 2019, except on MXS (this is '.', no matter if you are using ',' or '.').

My 2 cents :
Why not making the decimal separator a max preference, instead of calling windows settings, with , by default use '.', since MXS use '.' no matter the choice, Python use '.', and most of user using a ',' OS will change it to '.' .
This will allow user to change it to ',' if wanted, and so the list separtor will become ';' not ',' , but not sure there is too many user that will change the setting.

But this issue make max 2019 completly unusable, not being able to set a value, except typing again and again the value, until MAX accept it with the decimal value.

Seems like an old bug that creeps in once in a while... I have seen it on several max updates through the years. (Lazy programmers???)

I think a bug report should be sent just to make sure this is verified and corrected.

Btw. I am not on max 2019 so can't test it.

And yeah, near every fresh 3dsMAX release have the problem, just this time it's a bit longer to have it fix than usual.

Not sure it's lazy programmers, but I suppose most beta testers are or use windows in English US/internationnal (wich mean US), so have the . as decimal separator, since the problem do not occur, in this case, hard to find a old known bug, when people not reporting it.

Changing the advanced region setting (for number, money and calendar) to english international/US, even if windows is still in a coma separator display language (french german, swiss, European English,etc.) , fix it (but then problem happen with few other programs, and user will have a mix of windows display language, with english US).

I'm still convinced that this should not depend of windows language, BUT instead should be set in Max preferences, (and using the dot as default).

In Unity3D both comma and dot work the same in a number input field... but once in a while they mess that up too...

Oh, 1-3 years and it will maybe fixed... it's only one bug in long long list of not worked features...

I would like to understand the issue everyone is encountering more clearly! I have noted that the development team is aware of the dot and comma issue and worked to fixed this issue in the shared views feature, and other areas of 3DS Max. and I would love to pass along where users are encountering this issue specifically.

What numeric fields is this issue encountered in? If anyone could help me understand this issue further by uploading screenshots of their settings, that would be great! My units settings are set like this, and register dots as separators. I'm on Windows 10 and my regional settings are set to English United States, and my digital grouping symbol is set to dot.

In 3DS Max 2018, my units are set to feet and inches. Any time I type into a numeric field, it registers a dot as the separator.

Again, if anyone would like to upload their settings that I can attempt to emulate and reproduce the issue, it would help me out a lot! Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding 😄

Take ANY of windows language, that use 'System International' decimal separator (so non common wealth old colony country/ Asia/Arabic country, then it should one of the OS concerned), like French, German, European english, Portuguese, spanish, Beligium, etc … (a big part of the world , so you have the choice, for non asia/arabic country)…

The default decimal separator is 'coma', change it to 'Dot' because coding/scripting/computer in general prefear dot, to have a consistant experience, you will use 'dot'.., apply, then open MAx 2019 (or fresh 'out of the box, non updated, 2018 2017 2016 etc..., Open google, you will find the issue, for sure, since 2010) and just try to enter a value, anywhere, except in MXS ==> good luck .
If you keep coma, as decimal separator, it will have no issue, but you will not be able to use, the dot from numerical pad, or if we change the regional setting, to a language, that use 'dot', it will be ok too (but windows start to display half display language, half english (calendar/dates, in all softwares, will be in english by default).

Coma as decimal separator, create more problem that it solved, and not only with 3dsMAX, because, when coma is the decimal separator, semilicon is the list seaprator (Expression technique, ThinkingParticles expression,...).

Hard code the dot as decimal separator directly inside max, nobody will blame you (foundry have done it) if every year it's the same issue (it was for 2018/2017/2016 , I can't remeber further, but looking to google, this is the same since 2010), or make 3dsMAX to accept both (like maya, or mudbox).

And it was one of the time, that 3dsMAX accept quickly the value each time, My personal record, just typing again and again the value (sometime using coma, sometime using dot), was 45 minutes (to enter 1 value!!!, no joking.).

The parameter shows a , but will only accept . and vice versa all day long. 3, 4 or 5 input are necessary for the dot or comma to be validated. Regional parameters set to dot.
