3DS Max 2024.1 won't allow photoshop to save .psd files when open in Max is open

3DS Max 2024.1 won't allow photoshop to save .psd files once the material editor has been opened. If I close the material editor the problem persists and I have to restart max.

The flush cache in the Arnold drop down doesn't appear to work.

I'm running the latest version of Arnold and have updated max to 2024.2.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you saying that after updating to 2024.2 that you still have the problem? I have Max 2024.2 and can't reproduce it. My suggestion was going to suggest you apply the 2024.2 patch since you indicated that 2024.1 was the version malfunctioning.

Is it working ok now with 2024.2?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for trying to recreate the issue. I've now tested this in Max 2023, same problem occurs, so it's not Max. I wonder if the issue is with the latest version of Photoshop misreading that the PSD is in use in Max. This issue doesn't arise when going back and fourth between the 2 apps if PNGs are used.

I've found a work around, rather than loading the PSD as the texture I've set up an Action in Photoshop that saves my PSD and then saves a copy as a PNG. The PNG is used as the texture, and I can modify the layered PSD in photoshop, then with one click of the action save both, the texture updates immediately in Max.

This seems to work well, hope it's of help to anyone else finding this issue.

I tested again and can't reproduce it. Does this happen with both the Standard Material Editor and also with Slate Material Editor?

I wonder what would happen if you uninstalled Photoshop, rebooted and then reinstalled. Also, I assume you have an Adobe Subscription like most of us. Can't you just upgrade to the latest Photoshop (25.5). That's what I have and it doesn't have an issue saving PSDs with Material Editor open.

Hi Rob,

Yes I'm running the latest adobe products, I was one running photoshop 25.4 yesterday, noticed the update was available this morning so installed 25.5, unfortunately didn't fix.

Both Slate and compact cause the issue, if I don't open either editor then I can keep modifying and saving out the PSDs from photoshop.

The work around I've developed using PNGs (below) is works well.

I've just spotted Windows 11 (build 22H2) performed 2 updates yesterday (KB5034467 and KB5034765) perhaps this has caused this issue, It's now offering build 23H2 I'll give that a go.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll keep a lookout for this issue with anyone else. Did you try completely uninstalling Photoshop and reinstalling it?

Also, maybe try copying your ENU and saving it somewhere save and then deleting the original one. Start Max and let it build a new one. See if the issue is gone.

The problem persists when saving psd, tga, png.
Photoshop throws an error and substance painter freezes the max when saving png textures with 2k or more resolution (png error)
Will this ever be usable or is it recommended to use Blender?

There is some kind of incompatibility on your machine. It's not a global Max bug, or there would be a lot of posts about it. I can't reproduce it. I think that something else you have installed on your machine, a thumbnail program, an editor of some kind, something else...is causing this to occur.

You don't mention if you tried the suggestions I mentioned above. Did you?
