Hi James,

Thank you so much for responding. I did try converting all to editable poly then attaching them all to one. It does seem to work in 3ds, but when I export to the final format they just separate again.

I have a pair of denim shorts I've imported to 3ds, which are made up of about 20 elements. I would like to combine these into 2 or 3 elements if possible before exporting to obj. I tried the Welder modifier, but really do not understand how it works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

In the Welder modifier, use the option "Verts" and not "Normals"

Of course there are other reasons why vertices won't weld together,

But let's hope it's just this for now

I felt i need to add something, since i don't know how novice you are,

The Welder, even set to verts, needs other conditions to be successful,

The two elements need to have their vertices on top of each other for the weld can work.

I created a simple sample scene just to demonstrate this quickly. It's just a simple

Box that i detached its upper polygon, then i attached it again tp the box. So now i have this

Situation where you can find two vertices in one place:

1- Before Weld: Pairs of vertices in 4 places

2- after weld, the over all number of vertices is 8 now instead of 12. I added an Edit Poly above the Welder just to be able to show the vertices in the screenshot

Now, if you don't have this situation then you have a problem!

You'll need to cut polygons in one object to match the object above it so you can

Have the situation of Pairs of vertices like in the top example.

If you just want to combine elements in to fewer models right click and convert your models to an editable poly. Then use the combine tool to join them all together. See attached.

Thank so much for the reply. Welding the vertices seems to have worked, though I was able to do it via the welder in the modifier list ()I'm novice enough, I couldn't even get it to apply the weld). I did get it to work via the Weld button under the Edit Vertices section.

Strange this should have combined them into one mesh?? Try right converting to edit poly again once combined or...

use the technique of selecting all the verts and using the weld command as mentioned before (not welder modifier)
