Hi, I am on a mac, so I can't use max. I have a .max file and I can't import it into anything I won for converting even the fbx converter from autodesk.

I also have blender, poser and vue. none of these will import a .max file. I know this is an old thread.

you can get max on mac bootcamp unless this is your own file or you bought it and there is no copyright issues then we can convert it, but it this is from a video game for example then we cannot convert it due to the Copyright law

Oh thanks. That will be very helpful.

The person who made the model for me has changed it to fbx but he says because the model had vray textures that the fbx won't have the the textures and I would have to texture it myself. I am wondering if he means just apply the textures or if the old textures actually won't fit anymore or something weird. Anyway I'll take a look at the new file he gave me, and then if I can't get it working I'll drop you an email. Thanks so much for this offer. That is so nice of you.

By the way I heard that max 2018 is no longer compatible with mac in bootcamp even. Not that i use bootcamp or max at the moment anyway, but i am a bit curious.

Kind regards,

esther

Hi,

For the texture, he just meant that when you import the .FBX it will come in without any material or texture

Applied to it. So you need to recreate the V-ray material with all its settings including adding the texture map.

But nothing, basically, should be messed up.

For the Bootcamp thing i have no idea. I never had a Mac before, only PCs.

well there are a lot of textures and I just opened the scene in unity (although I would rather have it in one of my other 3D softwares but unity was the only one that would open this fbx even though my other software should open fbx files) and i was able to texture some of the objects because the names of the textures matched the names of the objects, but I couldn’t texture the buildings for example. I wondered if the information was contained in the mtl file so I opened that with text editor but it didn’t help me.
Kind regards,
Riesa

Hello @Anonymous

Thanks for bringing your question to the forums, it looks like you are visiting as a new member to the 3DS Max forum. I want to extend a warm welcome to the Autodesk Community!

If your objects are saved and imported as an FBX, the texture data (linking the 3D object and 2D texture map) should come along with it.

If some of your objects dont have materials linked to them, you will either have to manually link those textures to the model again....or make new textures if the texture is missing.

It would be super helpful if you could attach the files you are working with onto your next forum post, or in a private message. If you are unable to, the next best thing would be screenshots of the import/export menus you are using so folks here on the forums can best help you solve the issue 😄

Looking forward to chatting more!

Hi Hagen, thanks for the welcome. I am new and I don't own any autodesk software so I feel like a bit of an imposter here in this forum. Sometimes I do think about getting maya though hehe, but i am not a modeller and resist getting into that side of 3d as I feel it would slow me down with my creative rendering stuff that I do. I am creating a comic and I mainly render in poser. I'm on a mac and the next version of octane is a possibility for me to render in, but I don't need supergood rendering as I toon all my renders anyway www.pacefiction.com

None of the textures were associated with the 3dmeshes when I imported the model into unity. I don't actually use unity though. I just wanted to see how the model would look as it wouldn't import into poser and it crashed my vue (e-on software). Speaking of vue I do own xstream so if I had some other software I could possibly render in it from vue. vue imports poser. If I couldn't import the model as a 3d scene anywhere except unity, I was thinking I could do some screen caps in unity and use the pictures for backgrounds in my comic. In unity I could assign some textures to some meshes but the problem is that the texture names are nonspecific for which meshes they belong to mostly. There is a mtl file but I opened it in text editor and it did not provide any helpful info for saying which meshes the textures belong time.

I think the fbx converted model probably changed the names of the textures which is why the softwares can't find the textures.

Anyway the good news is that Miled is taking a shot at converting the model to me to some other format and keeping the textures associated.

Kind regards,

esther

@Anonymous

Thanks for the additional info! If you aren't working in 3DS Max, I'm not sure how much help I can be! I hope that @miledrizk can figure out something to help the issue you are having 😄

You may have to create a material inside Unity to assign to your object if its not showing up, here is a video walking through how to do that!

Best of luck, your comics are pretty neat!

told you I was an imposter hehe. Miles is amazing. He’s going out of his way to help me get this model working in my own software that I use.
Thanks for checking out my comic. I’m pretty slow at putting out episodes. I render in 3d but then i am doing some not so great postwork to put wrinkles and folds in clothes and more facial expression, wispy hair etc
Unity is not something I really have the hang of as yet. I just sometimes buy a scene and then use a screen shot as a background.
Kind regards,
esther
