Hi @Anonymous

This should be somewhat expected, as the .3ds format does not support composite or procedural maps or materials other than 'standard' materials. What is the end goal of your workflow? Maybe we can find a different way to get there?

I am using 3ds max 2018.FBX Plug-in version: 2018.1 Release (245710).

Workflow1:

I first export fbx from infraworks. Then FBX is imported into 3ds max, the scence looks like:

scene in max
then in file menu, when exported to .3ds, it says

it says will preserve coordinateand shortened my texture filename

But，there is no file[5_1_00.E.jpg] found where the .3ds file is.

When I open the .3ds file , it has no texture. the model is white, see the following picture

workflow1-outcome

Workflow2:

Continue with workflow1.

I found the texture bitmap file with the long name in the .fbm folder, moved it where the .3ds file is, and renamed it as 5_1_00.E.jpg .

When I opened the .3ds file again, it has the texture but with wrong coordinate。

workflow2-outcome

My question is , where is the so called 5_1_00.E.jpg texture file exported to? And where is the preserved texture coordinate?

I am using a software which only recognizes .3ds file as the 3d model.

Thanks for the clarification!

The image files do not get re-exported when exporting the model in .3ds format, the message you see is just an indication that the path that the model uses has been truncated, so your workflow to rename the image files before re-importing seems like it would do the trick.

Now, as for UVs, this is a more difficult one to diagnose. How does it look if you re-import the .3ds into 3ds Max? I've done a few quick tests with 3ds Max 2017, 2018, and 2019 and in all cases, UV coordinates where successfully exported and re-imported. I wonder if the software you are using to import the .3ds files is failing to import the UV coordinates...

THANK YOU! You remind me of the right thing. I re-imported 3DS into MAX，it's white and I could not even be able to assign the material . I think I failed to export the UV.

Hi @Anonymous

I would check to see what UVW coordinates are on your imported object, I encountered an issue with .CAE files that reversed the UV in one axis to be minus instead of positive. Worth checking out if you haven't found the case of this issue.

Looking forward to seeing the solution to your issue 😄
