topic Stop...don't move! in 3ds Max Forum

Is there a way--any way at all--to keep MAX from Defaulting to the Move tool instead of Select?

It drives me right up the featureless, completely smooth, how-did-you-get-up-there wall, gets in my way constantly.

I'm working on a new model--which is already not where I shine; I'm better at animating--and I'm in the middle of some bit of work...and even though I never selected it and wasn't using it last, suddenly I'm on the Move tool.

And I really don't want to be moving anything.

Often, I'm trying to select sub-objects and need a marquee select. But for whatever reason, MAX took my last explicitly-selected operation and changed it to the Move tool without my permission.

And I really want it to knock that crap off. It has never helped. Not once, not ever. It's always gotten in my way instead.

Please tell me there is a way to fix this, even if it's a mod from offsite, and I'm soooooo tired of it after so many years.

And if you're a developer for Autodesk, find whomever hasn't gotten on this already and take away their parking space.

Hi @quinnredshift ,

Short answer, I don't think so.

All the mouse customization i see in 3ds Max is under Customize > Customization > Customize User Interface > Mouse. I'm not seeing any way to change the default Left mouse button. I would start there to see if there is something specific you can edit to work better with your workflow, but i can see how this could get frustrating depending on how often you select vs move.

My other thought is using the Scene Explorer more for your selections, as that would remove the need to interact with the Viewport altogether. The other thought i had was, depending on what kind of mouse you have, try key binding any 4th or 5th mouse button to select object. I know its not ideal, but at least it gives you another option!

Hope this helps in some small way, warm regards,

>> I'm not seeing any way to change the default Left mouse button

Nor am I, and that's the problem.

>> My other thought is using the Scene Explorer more for your selections, as that would remove the need to interact with the Viewport altogether.

No good; this is a problem on the sub-object level more than anything else.

I would go absolutely giddy-bonkers trying to select verts or faces using text.

>> The other thought i had was...

...finding whomever thought this was a good idea, smackin' 'em upside the head, and saying, "Hey...! This is stupid. Fix it"...? Cuz that's my thought.

>> depending on what kind of mouse you have, try key binding any 4th or 5th mouse button to select object

Not possible with my trackball, no.

And, frankly, I shouldn't have to use a kludge.

This has been a problem for literally decades. You can find other people kvetching about it online rather easily.

The fact that it hasn't been addressed in all this time genuinely makes me wonder whatinheck people are doing at Autodesk. I can point to issue after issue that many users have been howling to have patched for years and years, so I gotta wonder...whassup wi' dat?

Is there a way to reproduce this behavior? I tried, but failed. Can you try to nail down what operation causes it?

Are you sure you're not pressing W at some point during your work?

Best Regards,
