Hi!
I'm completely new in 3ds Max and now currently trying to work with LiDAR to create surfaces, objects, animation etc. But I've face with a problem at the very first step: when loading scan file it displays nothing no metter what file size (from 270Mb to 3Gb) or extention (.rcp, .rcs, .las, .ply) I load.

I also tried to fix this situation following this article https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Point-cloud-is-not-visisble-after-import-in-3ds-Max.html, but it didn't help.

Could it be possible because I installed trial version and it has reduced functionallity?

Thanks in advance!

Are you able to upload a file some of us can test? Also, what version of Max? Have you installed any 3rd party scripts or plugins that relate to LIDAR files, scans and their processing? Lastly, what graphic card do you have and what driver version?

As far as I know, there isn't a crippled or function-reduced version of Max. If you have a licenced version of Max, you have everything it comes with.

Does it show up in a render? If so, maybe it's related to adaptive degradation?

Hello!
Yes, I can download some files to test. I don't use any 3rd party scripts or plugins, only ReCap trial from Autodesk.com for LiDAR pre-processing.

3ds Max 2025

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.00 GHz

Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Edition Windows 10 Pro

Version 22H2

Display adapters: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620

Disk drives: TS512GMTE220S, WDC WD10SPZX-08Z10

Yes, as in it does show up in render? Any luck with the adaptive degradation?

Your GPU is pretty underpowered. That's almost certainly the problem. It's not really a production 3D card, so probably it can't handle the sheer size of a point cloud. Not much anyone can do to fix that I'm afraid.

Hmm. You'd think even with an unsupported card it would render, but who can say? Posting files might help so we can see if others can reproduce the problem.

Oh, I see, it's time to buy new PC.
Thanks for answers.

I just thought if it works in Infraworks, so it will work for 3ds Max. There I could even recognize some objects in point cloud, but it's not the level of detalization I needed.

In many cases you can add GPUs to a computer, your intel one is part of your motherboard most likely. (I could be wrong.) If you want I can try to test your file before you spend any money like that, make sure things are working. Otherwise, maybe you can test it on another machine. I'd hate for you to spend money based on the comment of some forum comment without being sure.

Alfred is right, it would be good to at least try it on a powerful and proper machine before spending the money. However, if you'd like a new computer anyway, one with better hardware for Max, then this might be the excuse you need to buy it. And best of all, even if it doesn't solve this issue, you'll still have a much better machine for Max for all other work going forward.

How about letting me or one of us sign an NDA as well? I'm a Product Designer, I've signed and maintain 100s of NDAs and I can give you references as to the security I provide for them. I could look at the file and then promise you I'd destroy it and wipe it from the drive.
