One other interesting point to note...I opened the saved file in Max 2019 and clicked on "File > Save As" and under "Save As Type" selected "3DS Max 2018". I then closed 3DS Max 2019, opened 3DS Max 2018 and was able to open the newly saved file. The 2018 version of the file works fine and I have no problems manipulating the Point Cloud, or other objects.

Mystery still remains RE: What is wrong with my version of 3DS Max 2019? Note, one other odd thing with 3DS Max 2019, when I initially open the software, I don't get the Scene Explorer and tools on the left side, like I normally would.

Greetings, I am having issues with 3DS Max 2019.2 (21.0-21.2.0.2219) Running Windows 10 with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB graphics card, 32 GB RAM and Intel Core i7-3770 when dealing with a Point Cloud object:

Steps:

1. "Create > Point Cloud > Point Cloud"

2. Click on "Load Point Cloud" and navigate to a .RCS file exported from ReCap (321 MB)

3. Click in Top view-port, point cloud is then displayed very shortly thereafter

4. Can center-click and scroll mouse to pan around and zoom in/out of the scene

5. PROBLEM: When clicking on the point cloud with the "Select and Move", or the "Select and Rotate" tool, I am able to, for a short time (~2 seconds), move, or rotate the Point Cloud with no problem. Then, after a brief bout of manipulating, the Point Cloud jumps back to the point where I imported then can't be further manipulated. Additionally, I can't add any objects, or manipulated other objects. However, I can still pan around the scene and scroll in and out with no problem.

Any ideas? I tested this in Max 2018 and do NOT have the same problem.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I'd like some feedback on this as well. I've been using 3DS Max 2019, 2020, and 2021 and I am constantly having problems with point clouds "freezing" on screen. I can move the gizmo, but the point cloud does not update it's position. I have to exit and restart a lot.

This happens both on my MSI gaming laptop (GeForce) and my Dell workstation (Quadro P4000).

We're working with Max 2020, and this issue is affecting our workflow which often requires more than just one single Point Cloud object, in a scene, and even though it is a known issue, it is still unsolved and causing our team to lose valuable time!
Please fix this ASAP. Thanks!

Good luck! SOOOO frustrating for sure. Again, my workflow is to export my point cloud from ReCap as RCS, then Geometry > Point Cloud Objects > PointCloud > Load Point Cloud > [NAVIGATE TO RCS FILE] > Click in center of Perspective View to add point cloud to the scene. Just tested again and it works fine (thankfully). Good luck!

Hi,

So it isn't Omniverse, okay.

Where are you saving your RCS files from Recap, are they local, on your PC or still in BIM360 or Docs?
It would probably be best if the exports were local, not that I know that they aren't already?

If your constituent files are located on an expanded network, try to collect all your assets locally, on your own PCs SSD drives. You can always upload backups later to the cloud.
But for now, try to minimise network activity.

See how that works out for you for a bit.

Also if your Onedrive is backing up your 'My Documents' folder, including 3DSMax Documents.... make it stop. You can specify which folders to 'Sync' on the OneDrive Website login page. Not via phone app.

Regards,
